Breathless
I would...hold you tight...when you cannot breathe,
When...the painstaking rattle of your lungs
Imitates...the slow rhythm of soft drums
And this life-long struggle...makes your heart freeze.
I would...be your light...when your sight's fading,
When...it's extinguished by a single tear
Running down your poor skin...because you hear
The shadows...which lie in darkness waiting.
I would...lend you my voice...when yours is mute,
When your sweet timbre...is about to cease
Like a one-stringed lyre's golden last tone.
Yet here I am...saddended and weak...alone,
Trying to find...some comfort...in my lute-
Crying out: Hold me, for I cannot breathe!
