This is my first fanfic - it's just a little something that appeared in my head one night :)

He took her in his arms. He had tried everything to save her; he had fought his padawan, his friend for her. But not just for her. What choice did he have now Anakin had turned? He still couldn't quite believe it. He laid Padme on the bed and turned away.

And now the Jedi were gone. All that remained were himself and Master Yoda.

It was over and all because of Anakin, because of them all and their failure to act, of acting too late.

How could he have been so blind? How had Anakin fooled him for so long? Obi-Wan felt ashamed, stupid. Why hadn't he seen? It was his fault it had come to this

He had always known about her and the boy - how could he not? He looked away when inside he had been in torment; he had closed himself off to Anakin to stop the flood of feelings that radiated off him. Was this why Anakin's turn to the dark side had eluded him?

He turned and gazed at Padme.

This was too much, to come so close only to have death take her from him. He knew she hadn't loved him. He knew that he wasn't supposed to love her. It wasn't meant to be. But that hadn't stopped him thinking, feeling that maybe she would, could, feel the same about him. Obi-Wan's eyes closed and a single tear ran down his cheek. Anakin had taken much from him, much more than anyone but Obi-Wan knew.

But he would look after her babies, they would not be harmed. He would see to that.

He left the room now and made his way to the nursery where the babies were being watched over. He opened himself fully to the force once more, it washed over him. He felt free, new, he let go of love and hate. He had to. Only Luke and Leia mattered now, there was no time for regret, remorse or the past. The future is what he would look to.

He entered the room where the twins were to find them asleep, huddled together in a single cot. The force radiated from them. He smiled; the future lay with them now and it was a future with hope.
