OneLast Day

Lily Potter woke up with a smile that morning, and when she felt her beloved husband rub a hand gently across her belly she just knew.

This was going to be a really good day.

"Harry come on," she begged her child at breakfast, "please, just a little. You have to eat something."

So Harry did. And Lily once again felt what a good day it was. James was making pancakes, Harry was nice, the sun was shining. What could possibly go wrong?

"Darling," James said as they ate, "don't you think it's lovely weather for a day at the beach?"

Lily shone up and kissed his cheek.

"It sure is."

So they went. They went swimming, dipped Harry who was shrieking with laughter, splashed at eachother and just had a generally wonderful day.

After a while Harry started crying, and they decided that it was time for lunch. Soon, after he'd had his lunch, Harry was asleep on their blanket. Lily and James just watched him.

He was so precious, like a little treasure. With small pink fingers and pouty little lips. Lily stroked his forehead affectionately, when she suddenly got a bad feeling.

"James," she said in a serious voice, "I don't want this to end."

James looked at her with confused eyes.

"Well, we have to go home sometime, sweetie."

"No, I mean..." she couldn't find the words. "I don't want this to end. Our life. With Harry."

"Why would it?" James whispered and stroked his beloveds cheek.

"I don't know," her voice was quivering now, "it just feels like we have to... we have to make this day memorable."

James smiled. His eyes was filled with so much love. And that he didn't laugh at her strange feeling, that meant so much to Lily.

"Then we will," he said, and kissed his wife.

That night they just sat by the fire, enjoying eachothers company, while Harry sat in Lilys lap. There was so much ahead of them, she thought. They were going to see Harry grow up into a teenager, and then a man. They were going to see him struggle with love and girls, until he suddenly got it right. There was so much they were going to do with their lives. And it all came down to Harry, and eachother.

Suddenly they heard a croak somewhere outside. Thinking it was just a bird, they chose to ignore it and Lily continued playing with Harrys hands.

Then there was a loud bang from the first floor.

"What was that?" Lily asked her husband nervously.

"I don't know," said James, and after some hesitation he continued. "I'll go check."

But when James got up from the couch and looked at her a last time, she saw the fear in his eyes. The fact that they knew exactly what the bang was about. But he left, and after a while they heard a loud yelp, and something falling to the floor.

No, not 'something', 'someone'. And it was her 'someone', she just knew it. But she wouldn't understand it!

She took Harry in his arms and cradled him softly, whispering comforting words in his ear. But when she heard steps from the stairs she knew it was over.

The last thing she thought before she met those red eyes and turned to look at Harry for what she knew was the last time was:

"We had one last happy day."

Then everything went black.
