Commadore James Edward Norrington walked out of his quarters in search of "Captain" Jack Sparrow.
After rescuing Sparrow and Elizabeth from that island Sparrow had given him the location of Isla de Muerta, and they were there now. But Norrington knew next to nothing about the enemy they would be facing to rescue Will Turner and Sparrow seemed to know everything.
As Norrington came out of his quarters he paused and looked around. He spotted Sparrow on deck, looking out at the graveyard-like water. He started towards the man, but almost stopped dead in his tracks when Elizabeth walked up to Sparrow.
Norrington quickly regained his composure and kept walking. The two people ahead of him talked quietly, and he wasn't close enough to hear the words they exchanged. It didn't look like Sparrow was going to throw Elizabeth overboard.
But one could never be sure with a pirate, so he quickened his pace slightly. But only slightly. He knew Elizabeth wasn't like the other hairbrained ladies that filled the rest of Port Royale; she could take care of herself, and if he gave any hint of thinking she was weak, she'd give him the silent treatment.
He watched as the two talked, and had to stop himself from growling as Sparrow leaned in closer to Elizabeth—was he kissing her! No. No it couldn't be. His Elizabeth would never let someone like Sparrow kiss her.
Turning the corner, he saw that Sparrow wasn't kissing her, but he was practically whispering in her ear. Elizabeth's eyes, that had previously been focused only on Sparrow flickered past, and spotted Norington. Her eyes darted to the floor, and Sparrow spun around to face Norrington. For a second, their eyes locked, then Norrington tossed the compass at him.
"With me, Sparrow." he turned to leace, and out of the corner of his eye, he saw Sparrow glance at Elizabeth.
Something was going on between those two, and Norrington hoped it didn't develop further that it already had.
