As the battle commences
I close my eyes and wait
I think of nothing but the fight
During that long moment
Before the first shots
I think of why I must fight
Why I gave up everything for this war
My innocence, my life, my freedom
All lost for this battle
It's worth it, I think to myself
And so I fight this one battle
As the long calm moment
Shatters with first shot
I return to the base
Another battle fought and won
More blood on my hands
But it doesn't matter
Because it's the blood of the enemy
And what an easy enemy
Each one so callow, so certain
Believing they could win on their own
They have no notion how capable
A calloused soldier like myself can be
Idiots. I may be young
But I have seen more battles
More Death than all of them
In fact, Death is my best friend
I walk down the hall
Towards the debriefing room:
Mission complete (Ninmu kanryô)
Now leave me be
The cowards at the base
The cowards leave me be
I am always left
People fear me
So I push them away
They push me away
I don't need people near me
Crowding me
A soldier needs no one
I lay down on the hard cot
It doesn't matter, though
The discomfort doesn't matter
Nor the Pain
The Pain is always easy to ignore
Just another signal for brain to analyze
So I sleep. Always a dreamless sleep
