Friends Forever.

"Aragorn!" Legolas cried out in sorrow. He and Aragorn had been fighting in a terrible battle with the orcs and with horror he watched his friend being cut down by an orc blade. Forgetting everything around him he rushed over to his dying friend's side.

"Aragorn," he whispered, "speak to me." The dying king's eyes fluttered open and fell upon the young elven prince.

"Legolas, my friend," he said weakly, "even in death you are by my side. I am grateful to you."

"No Aragorn you can't die!" cried the young elven prince, "We've been through so much together. I can't loose you; I'd be lost without you!"

"Legolas," said Aragorn, "you won't be alone. My spirit will be with you. If ever you fell lonely or afraid, think of me and you won't feel lonely anymore." Slowly, like the mist that was rising off the battlefield, Aragorn's life was fleeting.

"Legolas," he spoke again, "tell Arwyen that I love her and give this to her. It will be a symbol of hope for her, to keep on believing when I'm gone." Upon those words, as the last of the mist rose from the battlefield, the great king breathed his last.

A flood tide of emotions went through the young prince, anger, sorrow, and fear. He wished he could do something to bring his friend back but he knew that it was hopeless. Helplesness, it was something he never felt before, and it tore at his heart. His friend was gone and he couldn't bring him back. Realizing this he screamed in anguish, releasing all the pain in him. His tears falling on the kings face like the rain. "Farewell my friend," the elf whispered, "Until we meet again." And with pain and difficulty he rose to his feet. Suddenly without warning an orc shot an arrow, which pierced the elf's heart. Slowly, like the snow on the mountain of Cadaras, Legolas's body fell beside the king. His promise was fulfilled all too soon.

Elrond rode through the battlefield, looking for survivors. Instead he came to the tragic scene that happened hours ago. What he saw broke his heart. There lay Legolas and Aragorn. The king looked like he had been crying, for Legolas's tears were still on his face. The sunlight reflected through them and it looked like they were on fire. Then his gaze fixed on the young elven prince. Even in death, he seemed to glow, for the sunlight caught his golden hair. And could it be? Yes, there was a gentle smile on the prince's lips. Suddenly something shiny in Legolas's hand caught Elrond's eye. He took it and realized it was the pendant of the Evenstar, a single ray of hope. Yes, even though this was a scene of tragedy there was one thing that overshadowed it all. Legolas and Aragorn were friends for life, now they will be friends forever.
