Astronaut's Wife
Alternate ending #2.
Spencer looked down at his shoes and the water, now only a centimeter apart and moved away from it fractionally. "It doesn't got to be like this, honey. Please, come on, now. Step out of that water." He extended his right hand out in front of him. "Please, baby, get out of that water." His voice nearly broke as he pleaded; he was too close to crying, he had to be strong. "Come on." He shook his hand, trying to get Jillian to accept it.
Suddenly Jillian remembered the dream. Nan had sliced through the skin between his thumb and finger on his right hand with her nails as Spencer had killed her. The skin on the hand he was offering her now was whole. Perfect, white, shaking, and unmarred.
"Oh my God." Jillian whispered.
"Please." This time Spencer's voice did break, a tear tracked down to his beautiful lips. He stepped forward into the water, not minding it anymore.
"Oh my God." Jillian whispered again. Spencer hadn't killed Nan. He hadn't killed Nan, and now he was fighting back tears as he tried to talk her down from this. Flashbacks of all the time Spencer and Jillian had spent together echoed through her mind. In the mental hospital a long time ago, Spencer hugging her, convincing the doctors to release her. The evening Spencer proposed. The first time Spencer went up after they were engaged. The tiny wedding ceremony they had, Nan dropping the ring, Spencer tripping over his feet and falling. The day he'd woken up in the hospital after the explosion. The day she found out for sure she was pregnant. The look of anger, bewilderment, and sheer terror in Spencer's eyes when he'd found her trying to kill the twins, and again when she woke up in the ambulance after falling down the stairs. She had been putting him through hell lately, and he'd been right there with her even as she'd tortured him. She stood up in the water and slipped. Spencer caught her and spun, throwing her out and away from the water as fast as he could, as he did he lost his balance and fell into the water, flat on his back. Jillian lost her grip on the extension cord as she fell, the thought crossed her mind that she was glad she hadn't had the time to turn on the faucets upstairs, the she hit the ground. A millisecond after she hit dry tiles the extension cord slashed into the water.
Spencer jerked as the electricity was conducted through the water and into his body. He spasmed and twisted until he hit the stool, sending it flying into the cord, which in turn was pulled from the wall. He moaned and stilled.
"Spencer!" Jillian cried, waking from her frozen state and scrambling over to him. He wasn't breathing. "Spencer." It came out as a broken hearted whisper.
"Ma'am, please. I need you to move. Ma'am?" Jillian felt a hand on her arm, she was being pulled up and sat on a stool. The man was talking to her, putting a blanket around her, trying to give her a drink. Jillian suddenly realizes that Spencer is not on the ground anymore but before she can ask where he is she's being supported and walked out the door. They go down in the elevator, and out to the ambulance with it's flashing lights. Jillian sees Nan talking to the police, she must be the one who called 911, then she's sitting in the front seat of the ambulance and the man is giving her a shot. Just before she passes out a thought enters her brain. Just because someone isn't breathing doesn't necessarily mean they're dead.
