Consoling the Young Ones
"Master, why is the firenation doing this? We never did anything to them, why are they hurting us? Don't they know that what they're doing is wrong? They're doing such horrible things. Why master? I want to know."
"Papa,. Don't you wish those evil savages would just go and die? I wish all of them would. It makes me so angry and sick that they're here in our land. When I'm older, I'm going to join the brigade and fight them. I'll kill every last one until there's no one left. They don't have souls, and they don't have feelings. So I'll make them pay for what they're doing to us…"
"Mother, is the war going to be over soon? I'm kind of tired of all this. The whole thing is so stupid. I want Dad to return. Can't the earth kingdom fight their own battles? It's not supposed to be our problem too, what makes them think we're supposed to help them? That's why Dad can't come home."
"Grandmother, my teacher keeps telling me that once the war is done, the world will be united: cleansed and purified by fire, gone of all the evil guys who once tried to take away our freedom and who are jealous of our power. Lord Ozai promised all of us the world would be free and happy. If only everybody just saw that, they'd know that it's better for everything. Can't they see that we're doing this to make things better?"
Quiet now my child. Speak not of things you may not understand. Ask no questions of the world's sadness and anger you cannot ever truly comprehend. And…although I am grown, I cannot lie to you of what I think I know. For I too cannot tell of what may become of all of us.
