A/N: Here's another story! This is set after 5:15, Jews and Chinese Food. Inspired by Tim McGraw's 'Just to See You Smile'.
Reposted: I guess someone reported this story for God knows what reason. The email said:
"Main reason for removal: 'Not allowed: interactive, chat/script, real person,
mst, and etc.'"
But I don't think there's anything wrong. Tell me if you see anything to the contrary!
"Just to see you smile,
I'd do anything
That you wanted me to
And all is said and done
I'd never count the cost
It's worth all that's lost
Just to see you smile"
-Tim McGraw, 'Just to See You Smile'
A week after the play, Lorelai tentatively entered the diner and sat at a table in the corner. She ordered coffee from Lane and drank it alone, in silence. As soon as she was done, she carefully set down a couple of bills on the table and quietly left.
Luke had been out and had missed the entire event. Later, though, his faithful waitress informed him of Lorelai's visit.
Lorelai proceeded to come into the diner every day that week. Each day she would sit at a table slightly closer to the counter than the one she had sat at the day before. She managed to order from Lane during every visit.
After that week, however, she was as close to the counter as she could get.
The next day, she slowly crossed the floor, her heels seeming to click louder than usual. She sat on the edge of the very last stool.
Just as she set her purse on the counter, Luke stepped out of the kitchen. She watched him closely as he filled the coffee cup of the person sitting nearest to the register. Mid-pour, he felt her stare. He turned and met her gaze. Taken by surprise, he overflowed the customer's cup.
He quickly recovered and wiped up the mess with a rag he retrieved from beneath the counter. He then walked down to the end of the counter and poured Lorelai a cup of coffee.
And they were back at the beginning; back at square one.
He was the coffee provider, she was the customer.
She started coming into the diner daily again. They began to talk more and more.
Soon enough, everything was back to normal.
But many months later, Lorelai entered the diner with a tall, sandy-blonde haired man. They sat a table next to a window.
Luke observed them for a moment. The man leaned in and said something that must have been funny because Lorelai leaned her head back and laughed.
He approached their table slowly. When Lorelai spotted him, she quickly stood and introduced the blonde man to Luke as
"Eric… my fiancée."
Luke stole a glance at the left hand. Sure enough, a diamond engagement ring sparkled on her fourth finger. He looked back up and into her eyes.
With as much of a smile as he could muster, he tried to cover the disappointment in his voice. "Congratulations. I'm… really happy for you, Lorelai."
And she smiled, glad that he seemed to be okay with this.
He knew it was a lie. But she seemed to believe him. That was what mattered.
And given the chance, he knew he'd lie again.
Just to see her smile.
The End!
