~Kokiri Christmas~
I didn't give much thought to what the Deku Tree said. I knew he would tell me when we were ready. Even though I felt his timing sucked most of the time. Dmitri seemed to have forgotten all about it as he swayed with me in the hammock
Dmitri and I put rocks in Mido's yard again, then set off fireworks on top of the local shop as our ruckus. It woke up half the village but Dmitri and I were back up in the hammock before the blame could be dealt.
Link didn't bother coming out because he was the one who suggested the idea and he knew Mido would blame it on us. Course it was but no one needed to know that. Times were great and the three of us were like a close-knit family. Dmitri hardly spent any time at his home because he preferred ours but we certainly didn't mind.
But Kokiri Forest was only so fun for so long. Many a day we sat bored out of our minds. We knew every inch of the forest, maybe even better than the Kokiri themselves. We knew all the places to avoid and every secret grotto.
We learned the hard way a few times such as the time Dmitri and I fell into a Skulltula pit. Thank the goddesses Link was never far off looking out for me.
"What do we want to do today?" I asked as I was doing a headstand in the tree house so that I was looking at everything upside-down. It wasn't worth going outside because the snow hadn't started yet.
"I don't know. We've already done everything," Dmitri said lying in the middle of the floor. Link sat on his bed and played his ocarina. He desperately needed a new one but somehow the one he had still sounded good when he played.
"Shall we go play with the Skull kids?" Link suggested
"Nah. Sam and Danu said they'd be busy" I said
"This winter isn't fun yet. We haven't got a good snow"
"Wanna see something cool?" I asked
They both said yes since we had nothing better to do. I rolled down and then stood up a little too quick.
"Oh dizzy" I said grabbing my head. All the blood had rushed there.
Once I got my bearings I looked up at the ceiling and raised my hands up. Link stopped playing when the ceiling started blurring until it looked like the sky outside.
"Whoa, brilliant Saira!" Dmitri exclaimed
"Where'd you learn that?" Link asked
"I got bored the other day and figured it out. It's not really that hard. A lot of mental concentration."
The sky wasn't doing much for a while but eventually tiny flurries began coming down but vanishing as it neared us. I went to our curtain door and saw that it was finally snowing. I smiled at the sky then grabbed my coat and scarf.
Winter was always a great season because it gave us more to do. Link and Saria got the rest of the village to engage in a snowball war. Only Mido refused to join but that didn't keep him from getting pelted numerous times.
The snow came down for several days until Kokiri Forest was covered in a thick blanket of snow. I couldn't sleep outside in this weather but I stared out the window marveling at the snowy beauty for hours.
"Link! Saira! C'mon! The pond has frozen over enough finally," Dmitri yelled but we were a step ahead and already pulling on our skates we got from Vienne and Stu for Christmas the previous year.
We jumped out and walked unsteadily to the pond until we got our balance. Vienne and Stu were skating gracefully laughing and smiling. I envied their relationship while Link and Dmitri gagged. The only thing I knew about Vienne and Stu was that Vienne eloped with Stu. Otherwise their life was a mystery. Not even Dmitri knew much.
Dmitri grabbed my hand and pulled me on the ice. Skating was much like dancing with the sweeping moves to do. As I watched Vienne I recognized similar moves and realized she must have taught Dmitri. But how would she know? Just more mystery to their life.
Nothing could describe the jealousy etched on Mido's face when Link and Dmitri skated with Saria. I almost felt sorry for him because he tried so hard. I skated off and walked over to him and outstretched my hand.
He looked at me as if I was out of my mind. One red haired eyebrow cocked up and his lips pursed. I shook my hand signaling for him to take it but he's more stupid than I thought.
"Stop doing that and c'mon" I said reaching forward and grabbing his hand. When I looked back people were shocked that I was jerking him towards the frozen lake. A Kokiri child named Simon slipped and fell. I knew he liked me but he'd be highly disappointed to learn I was Hylian.
Mido seemed in shock and nearly fell when I pulled him on the ice. He couldn't skate worth a flip. He looked pleadingly at me so I pulled him gently to a deserted part.
"Get balanced first" I said "Put more space between your legs and hold your arms out to help you stay up."
He tried not to look at me as he followed my instructions.
"Now to go, push out"
Quite unsteadily he completed a few circles. He grabbed onto me a few times but he finally got the hang of it. He didn't say thanks verbally but the look on his face was enough before he skated over to Saria who winked at me.
Link and Dmitri slid up behind me but didn't say anything at first.
"You realize that's Mido right?" Dmitri asked
"Yes"
"And you realized you just taught him to skate right?" Link asked
"Yes"
"Why?" they said in unison
"Because not even Mido deserves to be left out," I said
Every Kokiri child skates and played Saria and Mido were together much of the time. After much play Link, Dmitri and I sat on one of the many bridges over the village.
We sat watching people continue to skate. Vienne and Stu were having a merry time. I noticed Simon set up his painting canvas and bring out his palette. He had it pointed at the pond but his gaze was upon us.
As darkness fell, Vienne and Stu told everyone it was time to head in. The triplets went home and Saria did too as Mido walked her. Simon put away his paint and ducked into his house before I could say anything. Dmitri went home with us since Christmas was the next day but as I was climbing the ladder someone called my name.
I jumped back down and looked at Mido. His cheeks were rosy from the cold but I think part of it was him blushing too. I could see my breath as I waited shivering for him to talk.
"Thanks" he blurted out finally
"For what?"
"You didn't have to be nice to me and Din knows you have every reason not to be"
"Don't make a big deal out of it," I said
"Why'd you do it though?"
"In all truth I was hoping to see you wipe out eventually" Course that wasn't the truth and he knew it.
There was an odd acquaintance between us and he even said Merry Christmas to me when everyone was gathering before the Deku Tree for Christmas dinner. Saria and I helped set up during the day. Many Kokiri were disappointed because no one was allowed to open presents. This was the first year everyone would be celebrating together thanks to Saria.
Everyone gathered and placed all the presents beside the Deku Tree who was decorated with tinsel and ornaments. He was like our very own Christmas tree. His giant leaves and branches kept the area dry and he used magic to warm the area. Vienne cooked everything for the dinner and Link and Dmitri were in charge of shoveling snow out of the way so people could walk through.
Around 7:00 everyone started showing up. I'd used my light bead spell to light the table and everything close in the vicinity. I loved Kokiri Christmas' because hardly anything was bought. Mostly everything was made or found making the holiday much more sentimental.
Once everyone was sat at the table, Stu revealed the food and everyone dug in. Not a single frown could be seen for everyone had a friend or companion. I had both. Vienne disapproved when Dmitri and I put our legs on top of each other but we just couldn't be comfortable any other way.
"Deku Tree?" Saria asked once the eating stopped and conversing began
"Yes?"
"Perhaps it's time to open—"
"Presents!" Everyone cheered. Vienne and Stu started passing them out and everyone ripped off the paper, ribbons and bows. This Christmas I got Dmitri a faery slingshot I had the Skull kids find for me then I got Link a small pocket knife from the shop. I got something small for the rest of the Kokiri children like Deku Nuts or Seeds.
I, myself, got a few more books from Dmitri, Stu and Vienne. Link gave me a potion making set a Kokiri at the apothecary set up. However, then Vienne handed me one more thing in a cylindrical case.
"Who's that from?" Dmitri asked
"Doesn't say"
I pulled a rolled up canvas out of the container and undid the string that held it. I unrolled it.
"Wow Saira"
Wow was right. It was a portrait of me up on the bridge. The detail was amazing but I noticed neither Link or Dmitri were in it. I looked for Simon knowing he'd don't it but he seemed to have left.
I didn't give much thought to what the Deku Tree said. I knew he would tell me when we were ready. Even though I felt his timing sucked most of the time. Dmitri seemed to have forgotten all about it as he swayed with me in the hammock
