~Not Friends~

The time continued on as a sort of routine, course I started hanging out with more than Link and Dmitri. I visited the triplets and Saria, and helped out at the shop. Dmitri and Link were always causing trouble and for once I wasn't apart of it. They left for hours at a time and I never knew what they did but I knew it couldn't be good.

One day when I went home I found a cylindrical package like the one I'd gotten for Christmas two years before. I was eight now and still I'd never talked to Simon. Not for the lack of trying but because he was never around.

I went to the shop to get the new picture framed which was of me on a ladder in the library trying to reach a book. I'm not sure how he got that pose but I liked the picture. I finally decided I was going to stay at his tree house until he showed up and thank him properly.

"Come by tomorrow Saira and I'll have it ready," Dom said to me. He was a short little Kokiri who had to jump to see over the counter but he always got me whatever I needed.

"Thanks Dom, see you then"

"You sure have matured up this year" he commented

"One of the musketeers had to become the voice of reason," I said

I walked out and immediately headed over to Simon's house. Another year had come and gone and this was January 1st. His house was right across the shop on the other side of the frozen fountain pond. I glided over trying to balance on one foot all the way across.

I stood outside and called for him but no answer. I pushed the curtain aside and called again but still no answer. I saw the small flicker of light and went in. His house was pretty large considering he was the only one who lived there.

The bottom was covered in paint, canvas stands and pictures and sketches scattered the floors and walls. A small kitchen area was in the back and a teakettle was hissing. I ran over and lifted it off.

The rest of the house was on an upper floor but could be seen if you stood back far enough. There was a small bed and desk you could reach above by going up a small spiral staircase along the left wall.

I started taking a closer look at the tacked up drawings. There was one of every inhabitant of Kokiri Forest. He always drew Mido with a mean expression and clenched fists. Saria was always done smiling and in many winking. The one I really like though was one that had nothing to do with the Kokiri.

He had a book open next to a canvas where a description of the goddesses was and the Triforce symbol drawn beneath it in the book. But on his canvas a much better drawn Triforce was done but instead of gold it was in different colors.

One was green, one blue, and one red. Each triangle was filled with a portrait of a goddess. All three were extremely beautiful as all stories said them to be.

"Din, Nayru and Farore" I whispered aloud

I probably shouldn't do what I'm about to but curiosity blocked my conscience. The devil on one shoulder had the angel bound and gagged. I opened a dresser where I found a sketchbook. Inside was me, me and more me. Every angle, every emotion, and every pose was sketched.

I heard the curtain flap behind me and shoved the sketchbook back and slammed the drawer shut as Simon came in. Like most Kokiri boys he had red hair and wore green. He looked up and dropped everything he was carrying at the sight of me.

"Hi, Simon" I said cheerfully.

He looked frozen to the spot. I walked over and picked up his things. He'd just finished a drawing of a Skull kid and it was, like everything, quite good.

He snapped out of his little trance and took his things.

"Would y-you like some t-tea?" he stuttered

"Sure" I said trying to get him to relax but being really friendly but in all truth I despised tea.

"Oh, well I don't have tea" he said as if that was something horrible to say and he now looked depressed. "I only have hot chocolate." He added with more sadness in his tone.

"Even better. That always warms me up"

He attempted a weak smile and tripped going into the kitchen on one of his paintbrushes. He was now blushing furiously.

He picked up two cups and I could hear them rattle together. I joined him in the kitchen and took the cups from him and then I helped make the hot chocolate.

"I wanted to thank you for the pictures" I said breaking the awkward silence. He tried to say something but no sound came out.

"You're really good at drawing and painting." I said, "Does anyone know what a talent you have. I bet people would flock to your door"

He smiled sheepishly. "It's too hard to say goodbye to a piece of work" he finally got out.

"That's understandable but you've got a great talent you should share or at least show. Put up some of your pictures on your house. I can use a spell so they wont get damaged."

He was about to respond when I heard my name being yelled for outside. We glanced quickly then he jogged out. Link was the one shouting and he was bending over a soaked Dmitri.

"Oh no" I said now running over there at full speed.

Dmitri didn't look like my Dmitri. He was covered in blood, his lips were blue and skin was as white as the snow. He was shaking uncontrollably.

"Oh goddess what happened?"

"There must have been a weak spot in the ice and Dmitri fell through. The ice cut him up pretty bad going down." Link said "Somebody get Vienne and Stu!"

"That ice is several inches thick if not more!" I yelled.

But that wasn't the issue. I found his cuts and healed them to the best of my ability in my worried state at least to where they stopped bleeding. The shaking was getting worse but my mind went blank. I pulled up into my lap and held him close hoping that would warm him up. I think it started working because it wasn't as bad. I kissed his forehead then held him tighter.

Vienne came running out with Stu. They scooped Dmitri up and carried him away. I went to examine the ice he fell through. There's no way he could have fallen through unless the ice was tampered with.

And that evidence was clear. The ice around the visible hole was thin from underneath and chipped meaning someone magically thinned the ice and chipped it to make it look like it was skated over. And with the way the light reflects it would have been impossible to see.

Also everyone knew that Dmitri was usually the first one out to skate in the winter. In the summer you'd practically have to drag him out of bed to get him up before noon. Simon came up behind me as I used my own magic to thicken the ice.

"Dmitri flirts a lot" he said quietly "Mido didn't like it"

I turned to look at him but he disappeared into his house. But he'd given me a big clue. I got up and ran over to Mido's house but didn't walk in the front. I used the back entrance Dmitri showed me.

I stopped in and Mido was with several of his Kokiri friends. When I heard them bragging about how Dmitri fell, I was filled with a boiling rage.

I jumped down but they didn't hear me and when I emerged out of the shadows they all jumped in surprise. Mido looked fearful because I was mad and my eyes definitely showed it.

"H-hi Saira. Happy New Year"

"This is not a happy new year," I practically hissed. If you looked closely, things were gaining an icy cover.

"I-Is there something wrong?"

"I'd say so. You hurt my best friend and if he doesn't get better, I'll hurt you. Is that perfectly clear?"

"I don't know what you're talking about" he said with his teeth beginning to chatter.

"Let's make one more thing clear. You're not my friend and as far as I'm concerned, you never will be"

I turned my heel and stormed out. I left a patch of ice outside his door and used an illusion spell to hide it. I wandered for a long time before I finally went to Dmitri's house and burst in without knocking. I'd been there several times and ran upstairs where Vienne was nursing her son. He was awake and being forced to eat hot soup. His arms and legs were bandaged and there were a few scratches on his face.

He smiled big seeing me then got a mouthful of soup.

"Mum!" he said irritated and maybe a bit embarrassed.

"Dmitri you fell in a freezing pond. You could get chills!"

"I'm fine mum. Saira healed me up good"

Vienne rolled her eyes and left us. Then I crawled up beside Dmitri in his bed.

"You scared me today" I said

"I'm sorry"

"We need a prank. A really good one. We better get Link's help on this one"

"Wow, bringing in the big guns. Who're we after?"

"Mido"

"I thought you were making nice-nice with him"

"Seriously regretting that now," I sneered at the thought.
