~Last Year~

Turned out Mido's red skin lasted quite a few months well past my 9th birthday. Seeing him like that was satisfaction enough for me to enjoy my birthday.

We were now counting down the days until I turned ten and we could leave. I think that's a big reason why we forgot all about maturity and were causing scenes almost everyday. Stu and Vienne tried to keep Dmitri out of it but he was an expert at sneaking out.

Course they gave Link a stern talking to and egged on his parent mood he'd been entrusted with when I came to the Kokiri Forest. He only joined in if he knew we could get away with it and not be caught.

My visions were becoming more frequent but I'd gotten better at hiding them. I figured out that I was the Hylian Seer after a bombshell of hints from the Deku Tree. Sometimes I'm oblivious to what's right in front of me. It was weird to see things before they happened and have the ability to prevent it most of the time. They could get pretty painful sometimes but nothing a good swim couldn't cure.

"Saira" Dmitri whispered one night throwing pebbles up at me. It was getting chilly outside but not so much where I wouldn't sleep out there. I peered down and Dmitri smiled up at me like usual.

"My parents are talking and it sounds serious. Get Link too"

I went inside and woke up Link. We followed Dmitri to his house and went in on the top floor. Where Dmitri always snuck out of. Vienne and Stu were talking downstairs but it was hard to hear.

"Saira, how 'bout we hold onto your ankles and lower you down" Dmitri suggested

"No way"

"C'mon Saira, you're the lightest" Link urged

"No"

But before I knew it they had me dangling down to be able to hear better. Lucky I didn't wear my hair down or it would have gotten in the way. Vienne and Stu had paused for a moment and I was afraid they heard us.

"Stuart I don't want to leave Dmitri even if the house in Kakariko Village is ready," Vienne said

"Vienne, you know one day we will need a bigger place. I'm already cramped as it is"

"What about Dmitri, Stu? We can't leave him here, and he wont want to go"

"He wants to go with Link and Saira" Stu said

"Times are dangerous. Link is not a proper guardian"

"Isn't he though? He's always watched out for them"

"Here in Kokiri Forest but not out in Hyrule. I know what its like. Both of us do" Vienne said almost angry.

"You know Dmitri is going to go with them whether we want him to or not" Stu said, "He and Saira are practically joined at the hip"

"I know. He's so much like you were. But Saira has proved her time and time again that she can take care of herself. She heals better than I do"

"Saira" Dmitri strained above me

I looked up and noticed my foot was slipping from his grasp.

"No" I mouthed

He tried to get a grip but I was sliding. Link couldn't hold me by himself how he was sitting. Oh goddess!

"Ow!" I said loudly as I landed on the table making several dishes fly off the table. Pain shot up through my butt and I began dancing around rubbing it. Then I noticed Vienne was giving me quite a look. I wasn't about to go down alone though.

"They made me do it," I said pointing upstairs where the two mischievous boys were scrambling to get up.

"Dmitri Alone" Vienne said sternly. "Link Trinity. Downstairs. Now"

You would have thought we were on our way to a funeral. I'd never seen Vienne mad so I couldn't tell if this was it.

"In less than a year I know you two are leaving the Kokiri Forest"

"Three" Dmitri corrected.

I got the feeling Vienne desperately wanted to say something I was sure would keep him in Kokiri Forest but at the same time it looked as if she wanted him to go

"I can't make you stay here. Din knows I can barely keep you in the house. Just promise me you'll come back every year on your birthdays so that I know you're alright"

We all got up and gave Vienne a hug as our word. She sniffled suppressing tears. Dmitri went and Link and I began to follow but Stu grabbed me and held me back. Oh no. I'm in trouble.

"I'll catch up guys," I said

Stu guided me to a chair and then he sat down and put me on his lap. I felt I was a bit old for this but then again, it made me feel more like his daughter.

"Saira I need another promise from you" he said

"What's that?"

"I need you to take care of him"

"Till the day I die," I said smiling

"Well let's hope you wont be dying anytime soon," he said jokingly. He gave me a kiss on the forehead then let me join up with Link and Dmitri.

After that night we promised each other, as a way to thank Stu and Vienne, to refrain from any pranks and or causing trouble. At least until we leave.

The whole village was on edge at the sudden halt of mischief as if waiting for something crazy to happen at any second. Dmitri was tempted but I kept him in line.

As I was walking around one day, something caught my eye over at Simon's. Every week I'd go have hot chocolate with him and pose for a new picture. He even had Dmitri and Link pose in a few.

But as I walked past I saw a crowd gathered in front of his house. I pushed my way to the front and saw Saria trying to get a look.

"What's going on?" I asked her

"Look"

I did and several paintings were nailed to the outside wall.

"Saira" one Kokiri asked, "Isn't that you?"

And it sure was. Simon had painted a picture of me healing Dmitri. But I think my favorite was the one of Mido running away from the Skull Kids, butt naked, red, and trying to hide himself. Link, Dmitri, and I were drawn small in the back laughing.

"What's going on?" I heard Mido yell behind the crowd. He rudely shoved people out of the way but this time he didn't even need the dye to get red and that just made the crowd laugh more.

As the weeks progressed it was a new thing to see what Simon would put out next. The Kokiri loved it when there were portraits of them. After Mido kept trying to steal the embarrassing ones, I did a spell where only Simon could touch the paintings.

I loved seeing Mido get zapped. Every week Simon always had one of me, but it was nothing that recent. He had pictures of me to last a good year.

One day I went to his house early because he wanted my opinion on a new piece. I walked in a called for him. He came downstairs smiling brightly.

"Hi Saira"

"Hi Simon"

"I'm glad you came"

"What? Miss the unveiling of your latest creation? How could I? I'm your biggest fan"

"And inspiration" he added though he couldn't hide the slight blush in his cheeks. "This one took me awhile because I wanted it to be perfect. I can't get others besides you right. You're easy to paint"

"Okay"

"Well this is just a small one that is for you. After I hang it up, I want you to keep it."

"I couldn't do that," I said

"I insist. Well here it is"

He pulled off the cloth covering it. I'd say it was about 8 by 11 inches but with the most intricate detail I'd ever seen. Link and Dmitri were holding me horizontal in their arms. Something they did a lot. But again I couldn't get over the detail. He got every frizzy hair, every stitch of Link's hat and even the small scar by Dmitri's eye. I stared at it for a good long while. It could have been my reflection.

"I'm going to miss seeing these on a regular basis," I said

"What do you mean?" he asked

"Come August I'm leaving"

"What? How? If a Kokiri leaves the forest they'll die"

"That's not necessarily true," I said going off on one of my 'as a matter of fact' speeches. "The Deku Tree said it's just they lack proper resourcefulness. Anyway it's not like I'm a Kokiri anyway" I saw the look on Simon's face and couldn't finish my escapade of knowledge.

"Huh?"

I'd seriously confused him.

"I'm Hylian, Simon," I said slowly

"How do you know that?"

"The Deku Tree told me. Apparently my mom left Link and me here to protect us. He doesn't know much about my dad."

"So, you're going to grow up?" he asked sadly

Simon didn't talk to me the same way again. That news had hit him pretty hard. He was never around when I went to visit him and every time I saw him painting he'd run off. Course this news didn't prevent him from putting up pictures of me.

After he took down the picture of me, Link and Dmitri, it was left at my door. I kept that one right by my bed. Dmitri took one of me so I had one blank spot.

That last year in Kokiri Forest was certainly the worst. Not only because of the consuming boredom but also the other Kokiri got slightly intimidated by Link. He was almost 14 and much bigger than everyone. He was eager to leave and I was more than happy to contend.

So, I was now seeing my last autumn, winter and spring in Kokiri Forest.
