The Room Was Dark

by Cerasi

"Careful with that knife, Moony."

Remus rolls his eyes as he feels Sirius' breath ghosting across the back of his neck.

"Shut it, you." He replies, swatting a hand in the general direction where Sirius' voice had come from.

There is silence and Remus keeps chopping away at the vegies. Stir-fry, he has decided.

"Aren't you going to help me?" Remus asks.

"I think not." Sirius replies, scoffing at the very idea. "You look far too sexy from here for me to abandon my post." Remus assumes, from the noise, that Sirius is sitting at the kitchen table now, and therefore observing his arse. "Those pants fit well." Sirius says, confirming Remus' suspicion.

"It's stuffy in here." Remus says after a pause. "Can you open up a window for me?"

"Soon." Sirius promises. "How's Harry doing at school?"

"Oh, he's doing fine." Remus says. "Finishes in about a year, though. It's a wonder that he's getting through it with so many interruptions."

"But weren't we the same?" Sirius asks.

"Almost. Generally it was you and James who provided the interruptions, though." Remus smirks as he hears a splash where Sirius has thrown something at him and landed it in the sink instead.

"Moony." Sirius says, quiet and honest.

"Padfoot." Remus echoes, with a smile.

"I love you." Sirius whispers, close to his ear.

"I love you too." Remus says and closes his eyes. He puts the knife down on the bench and turns for a kiss.

The room is dark, and empty beyond belief. Remus sighs, tears quickly welling and soon to be making their way down his cheek.

"Not again." He mutters to himself. "Not sodding again." He turns back to his vegetables and continues slicing. "He's gone, and you bloody well know it." He keeps muttering. "He's gone."

He chops the vegies in silence, allowing his tears to exhaust themselves. The empty room is so apparent now, echoing its own silence. When he has finished chopping he opens the window and retrieves the potato that had rolled into the sink earlier.

Remus wanders over to the freezer, rifling through it in search of some kind of meat.

"I would suggest the beef." He hears Sirius' smiling voice behind him. "It will make you manly like me."

This time Remus bites his tongue before he manages to respond. He can't help but look over his shoulder, just in case. The room is dark, and empty beyond belief.
