Disclaimer: I do not own StarGate: Atlantis or any of its characters. I do own this idea of how the Alterans came to be, etc, however.

A/N: This is a first for me. I've never written a poem on StarGate or any tv show for that matter so review and be brutal and honest, please! Note: This has not been beta-ed.

The Story of the Alterans
by: roseofthegate

Earth, a mother of two civilizations
Great and bold were they both
And here one's story is told

The Altera, the first race of Mother Earth
A civilization grown a mature
To create is what they did the most
Ships, time machines, technology, yes
But by far the greatest and the best
A ring to transport you between worlds
Using a wormhole to visit each world.

But their home galaxy was not enough
They longed for something more
More…something their own.

And so came to be the Lost City
The City of Atlantis was built in a galaxy pristine.
Atlantis was the epitome, the peak of their time
So alluring was this place of perfection
All Alterans left,
But only after they sowed the seed of life
On Mother Earth so she could give birth again.

These times of perfection could not last
And unfortunately this came to pass.
Alterans, curious by nature, explored worlds
In their new home galaxy
Sowing life into barren planets, they did
Until one day it happened.

A planet, innocent as it seems
Shaped history for the rest of eternity.
Iratus it is called now
And its inhabitants are lethal.
It is the life force of others they crave.
Biting and sucking to get their way.

A poor Alteran fell to this horror
But survived by some hand of fate.
He made it back to the City Great
Nothing could be done and that sealed his fate
To become a founder of a new, terrible race
Welcome by none and shunned with hate.

Numerous they grew
Feeding on the brethren
Whose life they'd granted not a century ago.
So they soon brought the wrath of the Alteran, the life-givers
Upon themselves

War began, terrible and true
Until all the Alterans could man was their City on the blue.
A siege of a century more thus ensued
Until the givers themselveswere forced to leave

To flee to their origin, Earth.
To save their legacy the city was lost
Lost to the waters and greatness in the blue.
It was remembered, not forgotten
Through myths and tales told 'round fires.

The life-takers retired to slumber away
Until their brethren returned
To make them pay.
But millennia passed without a word
And hope was near lost to all the worlds.
