How Could It Never Be?
(Luke's Version)
"Rory", bellowed Lorelai, as soon as she stepped through the Diner doors. Luke watched Lorelai look around the establishment.
"Gessh, you made me spill", Luke complained looking at the coffee he had spilled over Kirk's table. He didn't want to admit that he was at blame, because he couldn't keep his eyes off her.
"Sorry! Uh, she's not here?" He watch her look around again before answering.
"No, what's the matter?" He forgot about the mess he made and placed his focus on Lorelai.
"I sent her a message to meet me here at 7 and she's suppose to meet me here at 7, so what time is it?"
"Seven".
"I'm damp", Kirk commented. He wanted attention as always, but Luke didn't care about him. Shut up Kirk, he thought as he threw him a towel. He didn't care where it landed, just as long as it would keep him quiet.
"Where is she?"
"Clam down". Lorelai looked a little frantic. What could she so desperately want Rory for? "Is everything okay?"
"Yes, maybe, I think so. I don't know". Luke looked at her, trying to sum her up.
"So what's going on?"
"Big things. Big potentially life-changing things". Like realising that Max isn't the guy for you, that you would then fall hopelessly head over heals in love with me big news?
"You get a promotion?"
"Oh yeah, they made me head salesman of the Northwest Territories. No I run and inn, there's no place to promote me too". I was just saying, Geez Luke thought.
"So it's nothing to do with work?" Luke smiled and then stopped. She broke up with Max? No she wouldn't be happy if they weren't together. She would come in here like she normally does and beg for some coffee. I would sit here and listen to her moan about how great his was, and how they were so right for each other, how much she loved him, blah blah blah!
"Where is she?" It was like she didn't even see him, didn't even register that he was in the same room.
"Have some coffee while you wait". He held up the coffee pot.
"No, I couldn't take coffee, big hole, through the roof, very bad". Luke stood stunned for a moment.
"Your saying no to coffee. This is big. Can't tell me what it is?" What could be so mind-blowing that she wouldn't take coffee? Could she be pregnant, selling her house, finally getting her inn, getting married, gone insane?
"I just really need to tell Rory first". He understood, why would she tell him over her. Why not tell me. Aren't I more important? The answer fell on his lap. No.
"But you're happy about this news?"
"I might be. Maybe. It's just kind of a, wow I can't believe this is happening to me kind of mind-blowing moment". Please don't let her be pregnant. Lorelai's pager started to beep as she glanced down to it. "Oh there she is! I'm gonna go". Lorelai seemed to stop for a moment, and look up at him with those eyes. Stretching out her hand, she produced a daisy. "The whole town gets one today", she mentions as Luke took the flower from her hand. Lorelai turned and ran outside.
"Bye", Luke muttered. He looked down at the flower. The whole town gets one. How many of these does she have? He felt sad at that. He wasn't singled out, Lorelai wasn't giving just him a flower, but flowers to everyone in the town, even strangers, even Taylor. This made Luke throw the flower on the bench. He went to walk away but looked back at it. Retracing his steps, Luke picked the daisy up and walked into the kitchen. He placed it down this time as if meant the world to him He would find a vase for it later and store it upstairs. She would never know.
