"Aragorn!"
The cry was filled with grief so painful and deep that it seemed almost too much for Aragorn – ranger and forfeit heir to a kingdom – to bare. His best friend in the whole of Middle-Earth had cried out the one, heart wrenching word.
"Do not give up hope, mellon!" The ranger called back to his friend.
The elven princling, Legolas Greenleaf, struggled against his captors restraining hands, but was forced back until Aragorn lost sight of him among the forest trees of Mirkwood.
"Heru protect you, Legolas." The ranger whispered before turning back to his woods. There was an almost invisible marker set in the branches far above his head and Aragorn quickly made his way to it. Three elves were waiting patiently for him.
"They got him…There was nothing I could have down. Now it is only the four of us." Aragorn tried not to sound as discouraged as he felt inside. The band of rangers and Mirkwood elves had set out with their number being twenty and now they were down to four. The situation was dire indeed.
"Despair not, dear friend." The eldest elf said softly. "There will be many more chances to win against this foe."
Aragorn nodded, but did not dare to raise his hopes. This enemy did not hesitate to taunt and tease. The anguish his friend must be in was almost unbearable for the ranger to think about.
"Come, there is little time."
Aragorn was snapped out of his thoughts just in time to see the elves leap gracefully to the ground below. With a sigh the human started his downward climb. Once on the ground, he headed westward through the trees. He knew what had to be done.
Twenty minutes later found him deep within enemy territory. He had stilled his breathing to almost nothing as he crept soundlessly towards his intended target. Finally, he was in position. Using a pre-arranged signal Aragorn was able to pinpoint his Mirkwood companions exact location.
"Now!' The ranger cried.
At the same moment he and the Mirkwood elves jumped forward with weapons drawn. They surrounded the enemy camp from all four sides. The enemy had been taken completely by surprise.
"Release our friends." Aragorn demanded with a smile of satisfaction. There was a moment of silence before the leader of the enemy band replied.
"I guess you have won this time, Estel." Lord Elrond agreed placidly from where he was sitting amidst the shocked Rivendale party. "But be mindful, next time we play war you might not be so fortunate."
