Inu-Yasha Resurrected
Kagome lifted her head, confused. Whatever she'd expected, she hadn't expected this. Somehow she'd imagined the boy to be sweet and innocent, but judging by the way he'd spoken – and the way he stared – she could tell he was anything but. She was wondering how he'd managed to wake up, whilst when she was touching his ears he hadn't even stirred.
As of now, he looked the complete opposite to a huggable teddy bear – which she'd pinned him to be. He looked like a cold-blooded killer, nailed to the tree for everyone's safety. And that explains why they left him there… Kagome realised. She couldn't think of any better explanation.
"Wh-Who are you?" she stammered – the question still unanswered. She'd never asked Kaede whether he was Inu-Yasha. But by now, she had a sneaky suspicion that he was. The boy smiled dashingly – taunting her. He had no intention of answering her question; he hadn't even heard her ask it.
"Destroy her with a single blast, Kikyo!" he grimaced – referring to the centipede woman. Then he added in quieter tones, "After all… you did it to me." His expression was unreadable. Something like laughter had crossed his face but it was insane laughter – as if he was hysterical… or just satisfied by seeing the girl before him being taunted by a creature that was no doubt about to kill her.
Kagome clenched her fists. This was the second time someone had recognised her as this 'Kikyo' girl. Well, she didn't care who Kikyo was. What was important was who she was. Pulling herself up from the floor, ignoring the grass stains on her blouse; she stormed right up to the tree, elegantly climbing the roots up to the boy.
"'Kikyo'…?" Kagome frowned, hoping to pump it into his mind. Instead of yelling at him, she ended up putting it slow, her tone jokey. "Whoa, whoa, whoa! My name's-" But before she could tell him, he cut her off.
The trapped boy's head jerked up suddenly. He was looking through the trees at something Kagome couldn't see. His ears twitched as if he were listening intently, his long white hair making it almost impossible for Kagome to notice. "She's coming." he frowned.
Kagome froze up inside. Quietly, she said: "What?" and then they both looked in the same direction, eyes wide. The boy wasn't afraid – just angry that he couldn't have got off the tree by the time the demon arrived. He squirmed but nothing happened. He could only move his head and hands – and even that was limited.
The next instant there was a roar, and something wrapped itself around the top of the tree. Its body sailed down and taunted Kagome, expression white with fury. Six arms scrabbled about the teen girl's shoulders. The centipede woman looked even more terrifying in the moonlight. In the village and the well she'd been in light – be it torches or sunlight – but now shadows crept across her face.
Kagome screamed. The sound of insect scuttling was too much for her. Above her, the boy watched with interest – but also distaste. He didn't want her to die, just to let him go. Even Kikyo didn't deserve to die like this. Something about 'Kikyo' didn't make sense though. Why didn't she just defeat the monster and get it over with…? She would've been able to manage it before.
Arrows. Arrows were pounding into the flesh of the centipede woman. The monster shrieked in anger and turned to see who had shot them – letting Kagome out of her grip. Kagome squealed and dropped down onto the floor – saved. It had been the village men, and Kaede, riding horseback – bows poised in the air.
Attached to the arrows were ropes, and the villagers cried out: "'Tis time! Draw!" and they pulled on the ropes, effectively keeping the demon away from the tree and Kagome long enough for her to escape. Wonder was still shadowing Kagome's face. "I'm… I'm saved!" she gasped out, happily.
The boy snorted, looking down so much that his head was almost resting on his chest. "Really, Kikyo… I'm disappointed…" he frowned, eyebrows arcing high in anger. If Kikyo couldn't defeat this simpleton but had easily killed him – what did that show? That somewhere along the lines, he'd lost it completely.
Kagome frowned, hands clenched into fists. "Listen you – I don't know who this 'Kikyo' is, except that she's not me!" she glared, face pressed up to the boys'. He pouted angrily. "Feh!" was all he could say in reply, until he was overwhelmed by anger and leant forward.
"Do you expect me to believe that I wouldn't know the stench of the girl who…" he roared, but then stopped. It made him think that maybe he'd gotten the scent wrong after all. "…Hm?" Leaning forward even further, he started sniffing the air around the girl. Then realisation dawned on him.
"You're… not… her," he finally managed to say. He settled back into place, wondering where he'd gotten the idea that she was Kikyo. But she had to be – she looked just like her. Instead of staring at Kagome, he stared off into the distance – hardly paying attention.
Kagome clenched her fists, satisfied. "Get it now? My name's Kagome!" Ka… go… me!" she spelt it out for him – words clipped and full of spite. The boy smiled to himself. "I'm a fool." Then his expression sobered and he stared off into the distance.
"After all, Kikyo looked intelligent… and pretty." Kagome gasped involuntarily, hand poised ready to slap him. "You-"
She turned. A man skidded across the ground – in the same fashion as the horse had in the village – his eyes were slammed shut and he was still holding tightly to the ropes that had held the centipede woman. Uh oh, Kagome thought, and turned just in time to see the centipede woman grabbing at her blouse.
Fear tugged at her insides and she grabbed onto the nearest thing – which happened to be the long locks of hair that ran round the side of the boy's face – making up his fringe. She screamed, not really noticing what she was holding onto.
The boy was tugged forward instantly and cried out in pain. He imagined his hair coming loose and yelled for all he was worth. "Let… me… go!" cried Kagome, terrified of dying. The boy shook his head from side to side, trying to shake her loose. "You let me go!" he retorted, even though he knew Kagome had been talking to the demon.
One of the village men ran back to Kaede, who was now standing in the large clearing surrounding the 'Go-Shinboku'. "Lady Kaede… Inu-Yasha…" he began to tell her, but Kaede saw for herself. She gasped. "Inu-Yasha is awake! That spell was meant never to break… but it has! How!"
Kagome heard this. So the boy was Inu-Yasha. But she didn't have time to look at him. The centipede woman's mouth was growing larger, making way for something… Fangs! She gnashed her teeth deliciously.
"This body… is so weak. I will devour you whole… Shikon Jewel and all…" she moaned, trying to get closer to Kagome. "No…" Kagome whined, slamming her eyes shut. She let go of Inu-Yasha's hair and grabbed hold of his red sleeves. He seemed to prefer this because he stopped shrieking immediately.
Kagome didn't know that it wasn't because she let go. It was actually because he heard the Shikon Jewel be mentioned. The Shikon JewelHe wondered. This girl has it? Then she must be Kikyo!
Kagome turned slightly, held out a hand and screamed. "Get away!" What happened in the well was replayed again before her eyes. The same pulse around her hand… the same light… and then the demon's hands were slapping on the dewy grass – limp and lifeless. The centipede woman backed off for a while and Kagome slipped to the floor, unharmed except for the many scrapes and cuts on her knees.
"Uh?" she looked around, bringing her knees together – wrapping her arms around her. "Look on 'er!" the villagers cried, astonished at her power. This happened in the well, too. How… How am I able to do such things…? Kagome thought, wordlessly.
The centipede demon shrieked and lunged. "Vile thing!" it roared, fangs outstretched. The next instant, Kagome felt a sharp stabbing pain in her side and she looked down. The centipede woman was biting her, lifting her up in the air by its own mouth. There was the sound of flesh being ripped. Kagome slammed her eyes shut. And then she was falling. The world flashed around her.
She barely had time to see the large pink jewel emerge from the bite mark on her waist, belched out with a trail of blood. It took her a while to realise the village men were grabbing each other's shoulders and blinking in confusion. "What! Something came out of her!"
Kagome looked down at the men, curious, but by then she was landing, bracing herself for a few broken bones. Something softened her fall… she collided with the centipede woman on the way down and this lightened her landing.
The villagers did a double take as they saw the jewel land swiftly next to her. "The Jewel of Four Souls!" Kaede cried, trying to run forward to retrieve it. Inu-Yasha was suddenly alert, his eyes fixed on the prize. Kagome had the feeling that he was about to leap for it – tear the world apart just so he could touch it.
Kagome cringed and pulled herself along the grass, wincing at the pain in her side. She picked up the blood-flecked circle and frowned in confusion. It was… inside of me? But how did it get there?
"I knew, I knew, I knew you were hiding it!" the centipede woman moaned. Kagome held onto the jewel tighter – out of fear and protectiveness. "That jewel is mine!" someone shrieked. Kagome looked about wildly before she realised who had been speaking – she recognised the male voice instinctively. "What…?" she wheezed, confused, looking up at Inu-Yasha in wonder.
He was holding out his hand, eyes red with ferocious excitement. "Give it to me!" he roared. Kagome lessened her grip on the jewel for an instant and then the lower body of the centipede woman scooped her up and plunged her forwards – smashing her into Inu-Yasha's body. Now both of them were trapped against the tree.
The centipede woman's body was wrapped around the large trunk of the 'Go-Shinboku' – crushing them to it. It was ever more painful with the roots digging into the wound on Kagome's side. She wailed and clung onto Inu-Yasha, trying to get some comfort. The sounds of her cries were lost somewhere in the middle of the centipede-woman's laughter.
"'Inu-Yasha who seeks the Shikon Jewel…' I have heard of a half-demon by such a name…" the centipede seemed to relish saying the words, smiling brutally. "At last we meet…"
Inu-Yasha narrowed his eyes for an instant, looking about to blow a fuse, then he smiled politely and leant back. Kagome looked up at the boy she was trapped against. 'Half-demon'? Him! She thought. Well that explains the ears…
Inu-Yasha smirked as if he were back to familiar ground. Kagome had the impression that if he weren't paralysed – his arms would be folded. "Don't insult me, Mistress Centipede." He replied. "If I'd wanted, our meeting would've been very short… and your last."
Mistress Centipede chuckled – humouring him. Kagome, however, scowled up at him. "Hey. You talk pretty big. But can you actually do anything except talk!" she shrieked. Inu-Yasha, shocked, blinked a few times. He didn't answer her. He just looked into her brown eyes. What a nerve, he thought.
"You cannot move, can you, demon boy? That's quite a spell you're under." Mistress Centipede mused. Inu-Yasha frowned, showing his teeth briefly. Kagome saw they were sharp. Not fangs as fantastic as Mistress Centipede's, but pointy canines. Fangs, nevertheless.
Mistress Centipede lowered herself to the floor, hovering above the Shikon Jewel. Her eyes were wide with hunger and anticipation. "All you can do now… is watch!" she laughed, tongue rolling out of her mouth and wrapping itself around the jewel.
"NO! It's mine!" Inu-Yasha screamed, lunging forward desperately – face flushed with anger. The centipede woman's tongue slithered back into her mouth – much to the gasps of the villagers and Kagome.
"She's ate the magic bead, she has!" One called, trembling in fear. Kaede took a deep breath, a foreboding feeling creeping up in her stomach. "This cannot be…" she moaned – the weight of fifty years crushing down on her. The jewel… it was back. Causing disaster – again. "What ill does it bode, m'lady?" another man asked.
The discarded arms on the floor started slapping the ground, writhing in the air. Despite Kagome's newfound power for wrenching them free from their owner – she couldn't stop it this time. The arms launched into the air, heading back to the centipede woman.
They slotted back against her body, colliding with the old stumps. They fitted perfectly again and Mistress Centipede flicked her arms about to determine how well they worked. "N-No… her arms!" Kagome cried.
Mistress Centipede's eyes glistened red – erupting as if blood were running through them. And then her head tilted back and she let out an ear-piercing shriek as she shed her human skin. What was underneath made Kagome sick and she turned her face away – digging it into the warm kimono Inu-Yasha was wearing.
The centipede-demon's body was the same, her hair still long down her back. But the demon was no longer a 'she' by way of looks. Her body was grossly the same shape, yet the eyes were larger – huge, circular orbs of red. And she had no lips around the mouth – showing the long jagged teeth plainly.
She had no nose, no human skin colour. Instead it was a dirty grey with spots of red where the human skin had pulled away and nicked the real skin underneath. Mistress Centipede was now a true centipede… a monster too horrid to even look at. Even Inu-Yasha gulped ahead of himself, but he recovered quickly. He was already running his eyes over its body, wondering where the Shikon Jewel was in process of being digested, and where the demon's weaknesses were. It wasn't his way to be afraid. He couldn't be afraid, even if he tried.
Mistress Centipede howled in pleasure, licking around the corners of her mouth deliciously. "Ahhh… such power… such joy…" Kagome turned, despite herself, and gave the demon the filthiest look she possessed. She, being a school student, was touchy on her looks and what other people thought about them. She couldn't believe that the demon was happy looking like that.
The centipede woman tightened her lower body muscles, reflexively and Kagome let out a howl of pain. It was forcing her further down – her eyes were opposite the bow of Inu-Yasha's trousers. She was being pulled further down… any further and she'd be crushed against more roots… mangled into nothing…
She found it hard to breath. Every movement was a struggle. She was beginning to give up… I'm going to die here… crushed by a–
"Hey." Inu-Yasha spoke slowly, apparently unaffected by the centipede woman's vicelike hold on them both. Kagome looked up immediately, even though it hurt. Beads of sweat were hovering on his forehead. He was in pain… but he didn't let it show. His face masked it completely.
Inu-Yasha looked away from her – staring into the distance. "This arrow." He whispered. "Can you pull it out?" Kagome, startled, stared at him. "What!" Her eyes ran up to the arrow. It was old – maybe it would come loose if she pried. She whimpered, trying to clamber up as the centipede's lower body tightened ever more. She shut her eyes and tried to reach up, her body almost shutting down.
Her fingers touched it. She was just about to wrap her fingers around it when… "You must NOT!" Inu-Yasha and Kagome turned to stared at the old woman who'd spoken… Kaede.
"That arrow contains the spell! You must not set him free!" Kaede cried. Inu-Yasha narrowed his eyes, fiercely. He didn't know who the old woman was, but he didn't like her. He was adding her to his list. Kagome wondered: why are they so afraid of him? He may be cocky – he may talk big, but I'm not afraid of him.
Inu-Yasha clenched his fists, his claws sharp and glinting in the moonlight before they balled up out of sight. "And what do you want, witch! To become a centipede's dessert!" he yelled.
Kagome turned to see what was happening to the demon. Mistress Centipede was shuddering on the ground – waiting for the full power of the jewel to set in. She was trembling in pleasure, letting out moans of happiness every so often. Her body was quaking to and fro. She seemed to have no control over her own body. She was killing the two teenagers without even realising it.
Inu-Yasha was continuing. "Once her body has digested the Jewel of Four Souls, none of us will be able to stop her!" he looked down at Kagome. His eyes were trying to force her to understand that this was her choice – her moment. "Well, girl! Do you want to die here with me!" he challenged. Putting it like that, Inu-Yasha knew he'd gotten his way.
Kagome frowned and reached up ever more, hand tightening firmly on the arrow. No. I won't die. Not like this… This close up, she had her ear against his chest… and was shocked to hear no heart beat. No pulse… no breathing. Then how can he-? He was dead. The arrow… if she pulled out the arrow he'd live.
Live again, Inu-Yasha! Kagome thought to herself, revelling in the fact that this boy was talking to her and he was actually dead. But not for long. She gripped the arrow tightly and before Mistress Centipede could drag her down anymore, Kagome screamed as she tugged the arrow out.
Inu-Yasha braced himself for the pain but it never came. Instead, the arrow vanished in a pink light, right beneath Kagome's hand. "The arrow… it vanished?" Kaede cried in confusion.
Suddenly, all the strength that had left Inu-Yasha seemed to fill him with a new life… a stronger one. He could breath again. Kagome heard his heartbeat ring out strong beneath his red kimono. Inu-Yasha pumped his wrists approvingly and then burst out laughing, lunging forward and outstretching his arms – loosening Mistress Centipede's coils.
The demon howled as he got free. There seemed to be some sort of power surge as he leapt off the tree, out of the demon's grip. Inu-Yasha padded softly in front of her. Kagome had shrieked and fallen to the floor, landing with a bump.
Inu-Yasha was on all fours like a dog, grinning triumphantly. Mistress Centipede snarled, mouth opening wide. Her forked tongue snaked out. "You… child!" she cried, launching forward.
"Old enough for you… hag!" Inu-Yasha roared happily. He outstretched his claws, laughing maniacally. "Demon be gone!" his hands ripped through Mistress Centipede's jaw and then down her upper body. In shock, her lower body followed through, running behind her for a couple of yards. And Inu-Yasha's swipe ran down her entire body until it sliced her completely in segments, where her body had wound round in circles.
"Aah! A single stroke!" the villagers marvelled, both filled with awe and terror. Inu-Yasha dropped down when he'd ran the demon through, smiling slyly. The pieces of ripped flesh dropped down onto the ground around him.
His arms were in the air like a gymnast who'd just completed a trick – long sleeves hiding his hands completely. Kagome's hand came up to her mouth, and she crawled backwards – out of the way of the falling debris. I... had no idea he was so powerful.
The discarded leftovers of the centipede woman's body were still twitching. Kaede knew better than to expect it was the last of the demon's nerves twitching. Kagome was standing up, trying to get away. "You gotta be kidding… it's still moving?" she shrieked in horror.
"Can you see a place where the flesh glows!" Kaede asked her, speaking softly. "The Shikon Jewel must be burning inside her!"
"But…" Kagome began. Kaede's tone was urgent now. "Unless you remove the jewel, her body will resurrect itself through time without end!" She gave Kagome a delicate shove towards the shivering body.
Kagome gulped. "Whaddya mean… unless I remove it!" she repeated. Crawling on her hands and knees, her eyes scanned the mounds of flesh. A piece of the demon's torso was trembling more furiously – and there was a white spot of light visible through the flesh.
"Wait! I see it!" Kagome cried, astounding herself that she could see the aura of a jewel through five layers of demon skin and muscle. Kaede reached in and pulled out the jewel. As soon as she had done so, there was the whistle of the wind. The body stopped shaking and evaporated – leaving only the skeleton.
Kaede walked over to Kagome and dropped down beside her, handing her the jewel. It was still warm in Kagome's hands – but it didn't feel like it had been eaten by a demon. At least it wasn't covered in saliva. Kagome held it up for inspection, pondering over it. "You're telling me… that this 'Jewel of Four Souls' thing-a-ma-jig gives power to demons…?" she whispered.
Footsteps sounded behind her and she turned abruptly to see Inu-Yasha striding towards her, triumphantly. "Exactly. Meaning there's no point in a mortal keeping it."
He flashed his most dashing smile – almost Hollywood style. Clawing up his hand, he flashed his fangs. "So be a good little girl and hand it over… Unless you'd rather feel the caress of my claws!"
Kagome gasped and fell backwards. "What…?" she wheezed, staring at his sharp claws. She'd seen the damage they could do. Either she handed over the bead in her hand, or she was going to end up like Mistress Centipede…
Kagome felt the helplessness wash over her. I. Am. Dead. She realised. Because no way would she let Inu-Yasha become something as strong as Mistress Centipede had almost become. He'd already defeated her easily … even when she'd had the aid of this 'Jewel of Four Souls'. So wouldn't Inu-Yasha be unstoppable?
She gripped the jewel tighter. What do I do?
Since I wrote Scroll One, I have watched episode one, but I don't know the dialogue because it was in Japanese – never trust your friends to lend you DVDs. LOL! So I know about some things, like Inu-Yasha's coolio spin when he's free of the tree and how insanely he laughs hides behind sofa in fright Brrr shivers
But this is the manga form and only in-between bits from the episode were put in – otherwise I took the action and dialogue from the book. Hope you liked it! Scroll Three coming soon!
Sorry if that wasn't as good as the first one. Hoped some parts made sense. And I know at points I made the centipede woman a 'she' and an 'it' but I meant to – it was almost from Kagome's opinion. As if she couldn't make up her mind. She is (in appearance) half human-half centipede so I just wanted her insect side to come out sometimes, okay?
