Zell took Selphie's hand into his own, squeezing it tightly as he shut his eyes, doing his best not to cry. He could hardly stand to look at her face, to see how pale it was. She looked almost ghostly, so white that she blended with the sheets around her. Dr. Kadowaki wasn't sure what had happened to her, but she had told Zell she believed Selphie was dying.
From the very moment he had taken her to the infirmary, he hadn't left her side. He'd barely slept, he was so worried. After Kadowaki told him the news, he refused to sleep because he wanted her last moments to be happy. He wanted to be with her until her very last breath.
He sighed, remembering the last day he had with her was always very painful to him. Tears streamed down his face as he looked through the pictures of them together, glad that he was in his quarters alone. Nobody had ever seen him cry but her. Now she was nothing but a precious memory to him. Their love would last forever, and maybe they'd meet again in the afterlife. At least, he hoped they would.
Slowly, he closed the photo album she'd put together a long time ago, just for him. Then, he wrapped his sheets tightly around him, somehow knowing he would join her soon. He'd become ill even before she'd passed away, but now that she was gone, he had lost the will to fight back. The depression had finally overcome him. Closing his eyes, he drifted off into a slumber he would never awaken from.
She was a beautiful angel.
