It was late on Saturday night when I saw them. Or was that early on Sunday morning? Oh, well. Attention to detail has never been a strong trait in the Pettigrew family. James was in bed, but I couldn't get to sleep. Meaning to get a glass of water, I crept downstairs to the common room, and there I saw them.
Moony and Padfoot. Snuggled up on one of the sofas beside the fire, fast asleep. Still fully clothed, exhausted from whatever prank they had recently been responsible for – neither had even bothered to come up to bed. Moony, curled up into a ball; Padders, stretched out behind him, with an arm draped over Moony's chest. Holding on to him, almost protecting him like a faithful dog would guard its much loved puppy. Or its mate…
They looked so perfect together.
They just… fitted…
The Marauders have always stuck together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle; like the links of a chain. Almost connected, somehow, joined so tightly. But Moony and Pads have always fitted together, closer and stronger than any of us had ever realised. I see this apparition before me and am at once struck with awe and realisation at my own blindness and stupidity – how the Hell could I have missed this for so long?
The two of them, fitting together so perfectly; as if two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. If only they would open their eyes and see what is right in front of them.
