When he had first come to live with Shuichirou, he had sensibly and conscientiously inquired every morning as to whether Shuichirou had his wish yet. Every morning Shuichirou's reply was the same: "No", and he would ruffle Kohaku's hair before leaving for work.

The first morning that Kohaku forgot to ask, Shuichirou had overslept and hurried out to the hospital without breakfast and only casting a preoccupied smile at Kohaku over his shoulder.

"Have a good day!" he called after Shuichirou, and wondered why he felt disappointed. He decided that he would ask Shuichirou to explain when he returned home. However, when he came back that evening, he was too sad for Kohaku to question and he remained even more silent and withdrawn than usual for the next few days.

Kohaku tried several means of cheering him up, but Shuichirou didn't seem to notice the beauty of the garden, nor the chirping of the birds. One afternoon they spent working on the bike, but Shuichirou kept his head down and barely responded to Kohaku's chatter.

Kohaku sighed and straightened up from his crouch. Some of his unhappiness must have shown on his face, because Shuichirou looked up and frowned at him.

"Are you all right?"

"Eh? I'm fine, fine!" Kohaku waved his arms, trying to dispel the concern on Shuichirou's face. "Are you? I mean – " he added hastily – "Shuichirou has been so quiet recently – " he stopped, blushing and staring at the ground.

A hand gripped his chin lightly, tilting his face upwards. "I'm all right," said Shuichirou, bending so close that their foreheads almost touched. He smiled and Kohaku felt his cheeks redden even more deeply, though he wasn't sure why. "Thank you."

He moved away and wheeled the bike away into the garage. Wiping his hands on a rag, he started for the house and then paused. "Are you coming?"

"What? Oh, yes!" Kohaku scurried after him, thinking, I wish…but since he couldn't think why, he quickly forgot about that, too.
