Arthur's note - I DO NOT own Harry Potter or any characters associated with the works of J.K. Rowling. In this Chapter there are some lines directly from the first book just tweaked a little as we are introduced to new characters, I realise I have Sirius and Remus mention that Harry and Haley might get stared at and praised in Diagon Alley. However I do not write a scene for it because that is not a major theme of this chapter, other than that I hope you enjoy :)
Edit - I realize I accidentally ently put October 31st instead of July 31st for their birthday I have fixed that mistake, I wrote this chapter late in the night and I also fixed some grammar mistakes I do apologize
Remus woke with a start to a loud bang that could be heard from the rooms upstairs. He looked to the man beside him, who was slowly stirring, he seemed to always react slowly to anything when he was asleep. He smiled fondly at the man he loved, after the two saved the twins that night in Godric's Hollow it was easy for Remus to finally admit to how he felt about the man beside him. And when Sirius had finally asked Remus to marry him the twins couldn't have been happier, with them there it was like James and Lily had never left.
'Do you reckon it's an emergency or if we can just stay in bed a little bit longer?' came the sleepy voice of Sirius Black.
Before Remus could reply their bedroom door burst open and two very excited 10 almost 11 year old children jumped onto their bed.
'They're here!' exclaimed Harry bursting full of energy.
'Who's here?' Remus questioned trying to look around the twins and out the door.
'Not a "Who".' Haley began excitedly, 'Our letters!' she exclaimed, waving around a piece of parchment in her small hands excitedly.
At this Remus finally saw the letters clutched tightly of both of the young children's hands. He began to smile when suddenly at once Sirius shot up, a look of pure joy splayed across his face without a trace of any previous tiredness.
'Let me see!' The twins beamed proudly holding their letters out excitedly.
'I can't believe they're finally here. I was starting to worry they wouldn't show.' Haley said, chewing her bottom right lip.
'You worry too much we aren't even actually eleven yet.' Harry said back, rolling his eyes.
'Maybe we should reread yours Harry, they might not want you there stinking up the bathrooms.' Haley said, plugging her nose.
At this Harry made to lunge across the bed at her, as she shrieked and backed away. Remus caught Haley as she began to fall off the bed while Sirius restrained Harry from reaching the smaller girl.
'Two seconds of excitement and you guys are back to bickering.' Remus sighed at the twins who had been mad at each other since yesterday.
'Are you even gonna tell us the cause of your fight or keep this up until you get on that train.' Sirius questioned the now pouting twins.
'Harry told me the puppy I wanted was ugly and fat.' Haley said her bottom lip starting to slightly quiver.
'If I have to look at it then I at least want it to be cute.' Harry said exasperatedly.
While the boy was normally very sweet for some reason he couldn't quite understand his sister's fascination with this particular breed of dog. Its face was droopy and covered in wrinkles and truth be told it reminded Harry of a pig. It was short and stocky, it looked as if it would lose its breath walking up the stairs yet alone playing catch. But if Harry were being completely honest with himself he would admit that he found the puppy quite cute as well, but he didn't want to see his sister sad when she couldn't bring her new beloved pet with them to Hogwarts.
'Harry what's gotten into you, you're normally so sweet?' Sirius stared deeply into his godson's eyes.
'I don't understand why she wants to get a dog.' Harry sighed looking away.
At this Haley turned around to stare at her brother quizidly. Her face began to ponder what he had just said. Confusion began to cover her face.
'Because we both get to get a pet to bring with us to hogwarts. That's what Papa and Dad agreed to.' Haley said, vibrant greens eyes turning to bore into the depths of Remus's own amber eyes.
'I'm sorry love I'm afraid Harry's right.' Remus sighed, not wanting to break his sweet girl's heart.
'Listen Doe,' Sirius began softly using her nickname hoping it would ease the pain. 'Dogs aren't allowed at Hogwarts, they take up too much room and require too much care with all the energy they have.'
Haley looked down at her hands as she twirled her thumbs, she seemed to ponder with a thought for a little while. The three wizards held their breath waiting for her reaction, they hated seeing the normally sweet and cheerful witch when she was sad.
'Well I guess that makes sense then.' Haley sadly agreed. 'I'm sorry for getting so mad at you Harry, you could've just said something though instead of being mean.'
Haley's big green eye's bored into her brother's eye's that were just as green and vibrant, though Harry's eyes were covered by the lens of his glasses.
'I know I'm sorry.' Harry looked down for a moment unable to meet her eyes, then Harry began to beam as he looked back up and said 'If you want I can help you find a different pet when we go to get our school supplies!'
Haley's bright beaming smile was the only answer Harry needed as she jumped across the bed to give her brother an excited hug.
'Oh can we please go today Papa pleaseeee.' Haley pleaded looking deep into Sirius's grey eyes.
'Well we were gonna take you guys on your birthday but I suppose if you can't wait.' Sirius said looking down with a smirk knowing the reaction he would receive.
'NO!' the twins shouted in unison.
'We can wait.' Harry proclaimed.
'Truly.' Haley said a smile identical to her brothers plastered across her face.
'Well I suppose we could wait.' Remus said, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth as the twins jumped forward hugging the older wizards.
As Harry and Haley bound out of the room, sending bounds of laughter throughout the hallways of Grimmauld Place, Sirius and Remus couldn't help sharing a sad distant look. While they were happy beyond measurement they couldn't help but feel remorseful, knowing how much James and Lily truly missed now more than ever. They knew they had to keep it together until the twins went off to Hogwarts, then they could let the sorrow take them over to grieve.
July 31st 1991
'Wake up!' Haley felt the full weight and force of her brother jumping onto her, causing her to sink into her mattress more.
'Happy Birthday to you too Harry.' Haley said, pushing her brother to the side as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes. 'You always wake so early on our birthday, it's not gonna go away before 7am Harry.'
'Yes but why waste time when we can use it as an excuse to do what we want.' Harry implored.
'Three hundred and sixty-four days of the year you're so sweet and then one day you..'
'Haley, it's the one day we can go crazy!' Harry shouted at her before she could finish her thought.
At this the young witch beamed and threw off her duvet, jumping out of bed, grabbing her brother's hand, she raced for their godparents room. Running through the hallways without baffies or socks always left their feet cold, but they didn't want to waste time for such meaningless things when they could begin to celebrate their birthday. Practically tripping up the stairs to get to the room, they rushed through the door but as they jumped on the bed they found nothing but a duvet and pillows beneath them.
'See we knew better than to try and sleep in.' Remus said in the doorway behind them sipping on his tea.
They whipped their heads around, but before they could speak Remus continued.
'Now before you lot get too excited I want you to go back to your rooms, shower and dress, and then come downstairs to the kitchen for breakfast.'
'Couldn't we just get changed and leave please.' Harry begged, trying his best pouty face for the wizard before him.
'Now Harry you've got to look your best for your first time in Diagon Alley.' At this Haley gave a small chuckle which earned her a quick side glare from her brother. 'And as for leaving without breakfast, while we could pick up something there, we need to have a serious talk first.'
'Well what did Papa say?' Haley began getting up to go look for the wizard in question.
'Not so fast.' Remus says, pulling her back by her sleeve. 'We both know one look from those big green eyes and Padfoot will cave' Haley had the decency to look down at this.'I already sent him to pick up breakfast to keep him away while you lot get ready.'
'Okay.' the twins said softly both slowly making their way back to their rooms to get ready.
'Happy birthday my little fawns.' Remus called after them, which rewarded him with two glowing smiles.
As Harry looked at his wardrobe he couldn't help but worry that it didn't matter what he wore because anyone he meets today will surely just look at his awful, untameable hair. As he began frantically trying his best to flatten his hair down his sister quietly slipped into his room and stood behind him looking at him in the mirror before them.
'I wish you wouldn't try to fix your hair Harry.' She spoke softly but full of sincerity.
'Why? It's like a bird's nest.' Harry said continuing to try his best to flatten his hair.
'Because you look so much like father when it's like that.' At this Harry looked away from his own reflection to stare at the picture of their parents on his desk beside the mirror. 'Besides who's gonna pay attention to your hair when you've got your feet in the wrong shoes.'
Harry looked down and to his dismay he had put his shoes on the wrong foot in his hurry to get dressed. He gave a small sound of distress as his sister bounded happily from his room down to the kitchen below.
Once both twins were seated and happily munching on the pastries their Papa had brought them, the two men exchanged serious looks. Sirius decided to begin hoping that the quicker he explained the better the twins would take it.
'When we go into Diagon Alley today you guys need to be prepared for the stares and praise you will receive.' The twins both looked up from their pastries, Sirius now having their full attention. 'As you know you two are the only two beings to ever survive the killing curse, which also means you are the most famous wizards alive.'
Harry and Haley exchanged quick looks as Remus joined in.
"Because of this we have kept you from too much interaction with the people of the wizarding world hoping to give you the most normal childhoods plausible.' Harry and Haley nodded in understanding. 'While we know you guys haven't had much luck making many friends in the muggle world, we are hoping that you can make some friends at Hogwarts.'
'But we want you to look out and make sure that who you make friends with wants to be friends with Harry and Haley, not The Harry and Haley Potter.' Sirius said softly, 'That doesn't mean someone with good intentions won't be excited to meet you guys. Does this make sense?' Remus and Sirius looked worriedly at the two children in front of them.
'Does this mean we can still look at the new Nimbus Two Thousand, I know we aren't allowed brooms at Hogwarts yet but I have to see it, not just in a magazine but actually see it." Harry begged, looking as if he might burst from his seat.
'Well we'll take that as a yes.' Remus chuckled softly as Harry began to rush over to the man excitedly.
'Yes, though I cannot wait to go to an apothecary.' Haley exclaimed, getting up from her seat carrying her cherry danish with her.
'Then shall we?' Sirius said, holding out his arm.
Haley smiled as she took a hold of his arm, while Harry took a hold of Remus's arm. And the four of them apparated to Diagon Alley.
'But why can't we just go look at the brooms now?' Harry begged as his sister dragged him along the street to Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions.
'Because Harry you heard what dad said, we need to sit still for our robe fitting and we won't be able to do that if you're all hyped up wanting to go back and look at the brooms again' Haley stated leading her slightly taller, just by an inch if you asked her, to the store their god parents had instructed them to go to.
'But how do you even know where we're going?' Harry asked as his sister pulled him further down the street.
'Harry had you been listening, you would have heard Papa give us the instructions, he said they would go and pick up all of our "boring" school supplies while we head to get fitted.' Haley stated as she pulled open the door to the shop.
Inside was a woman who you could only assume was Madam Malkin, she was a squat, smiling witch dressed all in mauve.
'Hogwarts, dears?' She said as Haley went to speak, Both twins nodded in response. 'Got the lot here - another young man being fitted up just now, in fact.'
As the squat witch said this Harry and Haley turned to each other looks of pure glee on their faces as they thought of the potential friend they hoped to make. In the back of the shop, a boy with a pale, pointed face was standing on a footstool while a witch pinned up his long black robes. The twins were ushered forward to two footstools in front of the boy by a witch and wizard who slipped long robes over the twins heads and began to pin them to the right length.
'Hullo,' said the boy, 'Hogwarts too?'
'Yes,' said the twins in unison.
'My father's next door buying my books and Mother's up the street looking at wands,' said the boy. He had a bored, drawling voice. 'Then I'm going to drag them off to look at racing brooms…'
'Have you seen the new Nimbus Two-Thousand?' Harry cut the boy off excitedly.
'Harry manners.' Haley reminded the younger boy, only by 5 minutes if you asked Harry.
'Not yet, I think I'll bully my father into buying me one. I don't see why they don't allow first years to have a broom. I think I'll just try and sneak it in.' the boy drawled.
'Merlin, don't sound so stuck up, it would be easier to make friends that way.' Haley irked.
'Do you suppose there's a better way to get my father to buy me a broom?' The boy asked intrigued if not offended.
'Well you can do what I do which is clean around the house for a couple of days to..' Harry began.
'Clean around the house,' uttered the boy in dismay. 'That's the work of a house elf, if not a mud…' Began the boy but Haley was quick to cut him off.
'Don't use that nasty word, you shouldn't go throwing it around.' she said berating the boy, 'Hasn't your father taught you better than that?'
'Well no fathers always going on about how filthy Muggle-born people are and how they're ruining our society.' The boy began but Harry was quick to interject.
'Well what does your mother say?' Harry asked hopefully.
'Mother says we should be kind to one another no matter where we come from.' As the boy said this both twins thought he sounded the most sincere since he began speaking to them.
'Maybe you should be more like your mum and not try so hard to be like your dad.' Harry said softly staring into the boy's silver eyes.
The boy seemed to take a moment to ponder this thought. While he was always told to be like his father from an early age truth be told he much rather be more like his mum. And truth be told, if being nicer was how he could become friends with the two kids who stood before him, both with dark curly if not messy hair and piercing emerald eyes, then that was a change the boy was willing to make.
He smiled up at the twins, 'That's something I'd like to work on if you would help me?' He questioned, a hopeful glee in his eyes.
Both twins beamed in response, glad to have already made a friend their short time in the wizarding world.
'Would you like to come look at brooms with us after this?' Harry asked the boy excitedly.
The enormous smile he got in response was the only answer he needed as the boys broke into an excited conversation about quidditch.
After their fitting's were finished the boy led the way to Quality Quidditch Supplies, which was where Remus and Sirius found them outside looking at the Nimbus Two-Thousand. Even Haley found herself deep into the conversation as they approached.
'The mahogany makes the broom look much more sophisticated in my opinion.' They heard a young boy, with platinum blond hair, say to the twins as they approached.
'We thought we might find you guys here.' Sirius beamed.
'And who might this young lad be?' Remus asked, turning towards the boy in question to give a small nod in greeting.
'This is,' Haley began but realised they never actually got his name, 'Well we haven't been properly introduced yet but we met him while getting fitted and asked if he'd like to join us to look at brooms.'
Sirius and Remus looked at the twins and their new friend proudly.
'Well that didn't take long for you lot to make a friend now did it?' At this both Harry's and Haley's cheeks tinged pink from the embarrassment.
'I'm Malfoy,' the boy said, sticking his hand out to shake Remus's, 'Draco Malfoy.'
'I do believe we are related.' Sirius said once the boy turned to shake his hand, 'Would your mother happen to be Narcissa Malfoy?'
The two twins looked at each other confused and turned back to the godfather just in time to see a beautiful woman, with long hair the same colour as Draco's, approach.
'Why Sirius it's been too long.' She said
'Why it has been Cissy.' Sirius said, giving her a hug. She and Remus exchanged soft smiles.
While they had found themselves on opposite sides of the war, Sirius knew that his cousin had never believed any of that rubbish that her husband was so into. He was glad that he was able to see her without the presence of her husband, Lucius, for they had not gotten along. For this reason he and Narcissa had drifted apart over the years, but he missed his cousin dearly, they had always stuck by each other growing up while defying their family.
'I just came looking for Draco to let him know his father has gone back to the manor to attend to some business.' At this she turned to look at the boy in question, who nodded his head in acknowledgment. 'And who might these two be?'
'This would be our children, Harry and Haley Potter.' Remus said softly as to not let anyone else hear.
Narcissa eyebrows shot up but this was the only indication she gave to their fame as she exchanged pleasant greetings with the two.
'Do you mean I've been speaking with Harry and Haley Potter this entire time?' Harry and Haley started to get slightly worried at this 'Do you reckon I could see the scars?' Draco whispered slightly in awe.
After a slightly worried glance at their godfathers who looked around then nodded in encouragement, the twins discreetly showed Draco their lighten bolt scars on their foreheads. Draco stared in awe at the two before saying.
'I bet I could still beat you at Wizards Chess.' while smirking, recalling a debate they had had not too long ago.
At this both twins beamed, 'You could beat Harry blindfolded but I'd give you a run for your money.' Haley replied.
Haley and Draco laughed at Harry's expression and easily went back to their previous conversation whilst the adults moved them along to various shops.
After saying their final goodbyes with promises to try and sit with each other on the train, the two families both turned and apparated to their homes.
Both twins had gone through what felt like every wand in the shop until they had found the ones that chose them but man did they love them. Harry was dangling his holly wood wand while stroking his new snowy white owl, which he had named Hedwig. Meanwhile Haley was studying her Laurel Wood wand while petting her new pure black cat, which after Draco had said something in french, she named him Noir.
To both Harry and Haley this had been the best birthday, they had gone to the ice cream shop to celebrate and Draco and Narcissa had even joined them. They each got beautiful new pets, and spent the evening by the fire playing games with Sirius and Remus when they had gotten home. They soon fell asleep on the chairs next to the fire after their exciting day. Harry had Hedwig perched on the back of his lounge chair, and Haley had Noir snuggled in her arms on the day bed. Remus and Sirius covered each sleeping child with a blanket and placed a kiss on their temples before heading off to bed.
