AN: This was written after a meme I posted in my live journal letting people request fanfic pairings for me to write a ficlet. This one was a request from ravenpsyche to do a ShinjixAsuka.

Love and Need
By butterflyshurricane
In a world where one never knew when the end was coming, people try hard to lead a normal life. The struggle to get out of bed, to go to work and do your job is overwhelmingly difficult when you live in a city that can descend into the ground. Even in this place, people managed to live, and even a few find love. The one emotion that humans cannot define, cannot describe, yet they still write poems and say those words, not knowing how another feels. What is the use of love if you can only feel your own for another, not how much they love you? They say that if you love someone, you would do anything for them, and cannot live without them, depending solely on them for all your needs.
"Where are the towels?"
"In the laundry basket."
"Shinji, where is my uniform?"
"It's in the laundry room."
"Shinji, where is my homework?"
"On you desk?"
"When are you going to be done making breakfast?"
"Five more minutes. Sorry"
"When are today's tests starting?"
"Four o'clock."
"My uniform in wrinkled!"
"It's the one hung up, not the one in the basket."
"Is my school bag packed?"
"Yes, it's by the door. Your step-mother rang."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"You were in the shower, sorry."
"Stop apologising! God you're such a whelp!"
"I'm sorry."
An underlying current ran under the morning's conversation, one that bristled out into their working lives, threatening to say what they could not. Neither could know the others feeling, she did not want to admit it, he did not know that underneath she felt the same. Even though these few struggle with the danger on a daily basis, they are among the lucky few who had found someone they need, even if they could not admit it themselves. Even as he choked her, next to the blood red sea, he still felt for her, knowing her feelings after being one with everything, and still she could not admit it.
