CHAPTER 1

"Kira! Kira Yamato! Are you awake?"

The sound was only a whisper in his ears, but he heard it. He couldn't feel much in his body. He felt numb, in fact. But he did hear the voice call out to him. It came once again.

"Kira! Dear Kira!"

Kira Yamato stirred for a quick moment, but then sunk back into sleep. He couldn't move. There was pain coursing through his very veins, and it even hurt to talk. His throat was dry, his hands and feet asleep. He almost felt dead. He could feel warmness, however, coming from his chest. Was he still wearing his pilot's suit?

After a few minutes of lightly breathing, Kira realized that he had been dreaming only a few minutes before. He didn't really understand the dream, but knew exactly was he was doing.

He had been flying across space. He was floating with no mobile suit to pilot, no battleship to ride on. He was just floating in space; simply floating. He could remember still wearing his Earth Alliance pilot suit, though. He was very cold and shivering, and he could literally smell death everywhere. He couldn't control where he was flying, but he could feel the tears adding up into his visor, fogging it up. Suddenly, he could see Cagalli's Strike Rouge approaching. Was it really her mobile suit? He kept staring and soon enough, caught sight of both Cagalli, and his best friend Athrun. They were both crying, just as Kira was, happy to see their friend and hero once again…

Wait! Kira thought. Was that a dream?

Kira attempted to open his eyes and look around, but he couldn't. He just didn't have the strength. Even being a Coordinator sometimes wasn't enough. All of the sudden he felt like he hadn't slept in weeks. What could make him feel this way? He knew that the room was rather warm, and he could feel the heat of the lights shining on his face. Someone was standing over him.

"Kira…you're safe, now..." It was a girl's voice. Lacus' voice!

"Lacus…?" Kira whispered silently. His hearing was back, but his vision was only a pink blur. Nevertheless, he was happy to hear her voice again. Suddenly, Lacus picked Kira up and cradled him in her arms for a moment.

"Just try and relax, Kira. You've been given medication in order to regain your strength." Lacus coaxed. Kira was sure she was smiling now. She breathed a sigh of relief. "You're safe from the battle, Kira. Jachin Due has been destroyed, along with the GENESIS weapon. The war has ended, Kira Yamato. All of us, including Naturals and Coordinators, did our part to stop the Earth from being destroyed. More or less, we owe most of our redemption to you and Athrun." Lacus finished sweetly.

"Athrun…he and Cagalli saved me…" Kira thought. Saved me from the wreckage of the Freedom; where are they?

Kira finally opened his eyes fully, to see Lacus again. He was sitting down in a chair, in a medical room, probably one of the Eternal. He was drenched in sweat, and his body ached everywhere. He tried to look around the room; no one else was in it.

"Kira…? Are you alright?" Lacus asked sweetly. Kira looked back at her and sighed.

She's really pretty, just sitting there, Kira thought.

"Lacus, where am I? I can remember the battle, but…but…-"Kira tried to say; the words wouldn't come."

Lacus smiled again, as her eyes glowed. She didn't answer, but embraced Kira in a deep hug.

"You will know later. But, Kira-"she stopped. Kira looked at her.

"What?"

"…Thank you for coming back to me."
