Chapter One

Laurie looked out over the water.

The waves were crashing up against the legs of the pier, and the wind blew almost silently.

She gripped the necklace she was wearing, the one her friend gave her before she disappeared.

Her friend had vanished without a trace.

Laurie had missed her so.

Tears streaked down her cheeks at the recollection of Raye.

Laurie walked to the exit of the pier, head down.

She heard some distant seagulls cawing at people throwing bread.

The sun was setting, and the sky was turning purple.

You should get home before it gets dark. The practical part of her was saying.

But she kept walking, she didn't know where to, but she let her feet guide her through city streets and into a deserted play ground near a neighborhood.

The street lights glowed against the darkness of night.

Laurie sat on a creaky swing, rocking back and forth, just staring at the nothingness of air.

Crack.

She quickly turned her head to where the noise came from, nothing was there but bushes.

She turned her head back in front of her.

Crack.

Laurie jumped up from the swing.

" Who's there?" She called out.

There was silence.

" Who's there!"

" Give it to me." A voiced hissed from the shadows.

" What?" Laurie kept turning around to find who was speaking.

" Give it to me!"
