Wham. The shovel hit the side of my head. Hard.

I staggered backwards as blood poured into my eyes. I fell to my knees blindly. And then I fell down all the way to the sounds of Lina crying out.

And then I passed out completely.

I couldn't breathe when I woke up again. I took deep breaths and tried to regain my breath. When I finally did, I touched my head where it was hurting the worst. As soon as I did, I immediately jerked my hand away. A bolt of pain had shot through my head from the large bruise I had achieved.

Looking at my fingers, I saw blood dripping from them. Shit. I thought. That shovel got me good.

Maybe I should back track a bit...

"If you weren't making us dig these damn holes, then none of us would bad mouth you!"

"I highly doubt that."

"Well, why do we have to dig the stupid holes anyway? It's not like it actually builds character!"

"Yes it does! Besides, you wouldn't be here anyway if you weren't a criminal!"

That struck a nerve with Batt. He hated being called a criminal with a passion. He wasn't really a criminal. His brother had gotten him arrested for stealing a car.

"I'M NOT A CRIMINAL!" Batt looked about ready to pounce, so I jumped in.

"Batt, calm down. It's not worth it." I said calmly, yet forcefully.

"Stay out of this, kid" The camp counselor, Dr. Parkinson, ordered me. I turned and faced him angrily.

But I didn't say anything.

"Batt," I said. "Don't let him get to you."

"I said stay out of this!" Parkinson repeated, lifting Batt's shovel. I barely saw it coming before I felt a sharp pain hit my head.

Lina cried out. She always had cared for me too much.

Then I passed out...

And so here I am now. Lying in this god forsaken bed with blood pouring out of my head. Lucky me. I knew Lina wouldn't be too far. She should actually notice I'm up in about five...four...three...two...

"Zan!"

Told ya.

"Zan, are you alright?" Lina asked.

I nodded slightly. "I'm fine, Lina. Just dandy."

She rolled her eyes. "I'm sure you're just perfectly well. Why do you always have to cut into everything, Zan?"

I smiled. "Of course, Lina." I said. "That's just who I am."

Lina rolled her eyes again. "You're nuts, Alexander."

"Right, now could you help me just a bit?" I asked, gesturing towards my bleeding head.

"Oh right! Sorry!" She said and started to clean the cut in any way possible.
