Sam Carter hated being stationed at Area 51 in the Nevada desert. It was too hot for her and the geeks she was working with kept looking at her as though she was the best thing since sliced bread, which irritated her to no end. She had been sent there by the President to help develop the new X-302 and was supposed to be there for 6 weeks. She'd already been there for a month, sometimes going for days at a time with no sleep and too much coffee. She had finally got a week of downtime and was planning on sleeping for most of it.

This was not to be.

The morning of her first day off the doorbell rang at 7am, waking her from a deep sleep. Muttering about severely hurting whoever it was she shuffled to the door, opening it to reveal Colonel Jack O'Neill.

"Morning Sam. I've brought coffee," he said cheerfully, moving past her and closing the door behind him.

"Unless the fate of the world rests on this I'm going to hurt you and then kick you out…Sir," she threatened, taking the proffered coffee and curling up on the sofa.

"Well that's a nice welcome. And it's Jack Carter."

"Huh?"

"My name. It's Jack. Not that difficult."

"What's your point Jack?"

"Christ. Here I am trying to be nice and all you can do is growl at me? Especially when it's important."

"What's important? Work?"

"Well, its important but not about work. Not really anyway."

"What do you mean?"

"Do you remember the conversation we had at Christmas, before Daniel came back?"

"Of course."

"Right," and with that he pulled two tickets to Las Vegas out of his pocket.

"Are you serious?" she asked, stunned.

"Totally. If you don't want to, I understand, but…"

"Jack," she interrupted, making him look up at the sound of his name. "You remember what I said about being irritated with you?"

He nodded, getting worried about where this was going.

"Forget it. Let me go pack."

"Huh? Really?" Sam nodded, smiling. "Sweet!"

With that Jack grabbed Sam around the waist and spun her around, holding her close.

"Pack for a week in Minnesota. We'll only be in Vegas for today. Oh and don't worry about the dress. Janet and Cassie picked one for you," he explained, setting Sam back on her feet.

"Janet and Cass? Who else knows about this?"

"Well, we're meeting the Doc, Cassie, Daniel, T and Jonas at the Hotel in Vegas and Hammond Says 'Congratulations!'"

"Oh. Ok then. I'll go pack. Feel free to make yourself at home."

Twenty minutes later Sam emerged from her room showered, dressed and carrying a duffel bag.

"Sam? Could you come in here a second?"

"Sure. What's up?"
Jack took her over to the sofa, gesturing for her to sit down. Once she complied, he knelt down on one knee and presented her with a ring; a diamond in the middle and sapphires on either side.

"Before you start protesting," he began, "I know I didn't have to but I wanted to. So, Samantha Carter… Marry me?"

"Oh Jack. It's beautiful!"

"Will you?"

"Yes!"

Jack took the ring out of the case and slipped it onto Sam's finger, just before she threw her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly, which he returned.

"Come on, we don't want to miss our flight."
