A/n This thought came to me while I was reading another fanfic. about how Zoe felt two months after Wash died. Well what if Wash hadn't died? What if Zoe died instead

Timeline: Two months after Wash dies in the movie.

Wash tossed in his sleep. He was having another nightmare. He woke up, sweat rolled down his face. He was remembering how Zoe had died. He started crying as he thought about it.

"I'm a leaf on the wind, watch-"

"Wash, watch out!" Zoe jumped in front of Wash, narrowly missing the wooden stake that now protruded from the glass. Zoe looked at Wash and smiled. Wash let out a relieved sigh.

"I'm a leaf on the wind, watch how I-"

Wash was cut off again by another wooden stake piercing Zoe in the head. Wash looked at Zoe in sorrow and disbelief. Wash almost cried.

"Soar…" Wash said feebly and then started to cry. Mal's face was blank. "Honey buns, don't die on me. I'm not ready for you to die. Not yet honey buns, you're stronger than me. I can't soar anymore."

"Crew Members please report to the dock at once," came the voice through the through the intercom. But the voice wasn't Mal's. It sounded different, it was a cool evil voice. Wash jumped out of bed threw some clothes on and ran out into corridor.

Wash felt Jayne brush past him hurrying towards the ship. He ran into the dock to find Mal lying the floor, blood pouring out of his chest. Standing next to Mal was The Objective (a/n that was the evil dude that killed Mr. Universe right?) hold River's arm tightly. River's face was blank.

Jayne was standing their muttering something about how they should of handed River over in the first place. Simon was crying. Wash was wishing that River would go into her wacky self-defense mode. But River didn't, she stood their helpless like a little baby.

"I… I thought you said you'd stop?" Simon said.

"I lied," The Objective answered.

Wash woke up sweat poured down his face. "I'm a leaf in the wind, watch how I soar," he muttered. Wash started crying.
