Fear and Understanding:

Violet watched as Klaus and Sunny slept. Sunny was tucked nicely into her crib, and Klaus was asleep on his bed. She couldn't sleep. Not with the knowledge that Count Olaf was out there with Uncle Monty, probably planning something sinister as the seconds ticked by.

She played with her black ribbon that she used to tie her hair with when she invented things. She tried not to think about her parent's deaths often, but now it was at the front of her mind. Then a sickening realization bubbled up from the bottom of her mind. Count Olaf killed her parents. It was so obvious, and she chastised herself for not seeing it earlier. It was all in the way he sneered at her siblings. It was all in the slimy, disgusting way he purred her name.

He was really desperate for the money that their parents had. She began to wonder why. He didn't have anybody, no wife, no lover, and as far as she knew, no living relatives left. All he had was his acting group. He would probably use their money to remodel his wretched house and buy a real theater for his acting group.

Violet wondered what he did before the whole fortune thing came up. Did he content himself by making his neighbors' lives miserable? Did he sit around with his actors, planning plot-less shows and casting insignificant plays? Violet also wondered how Count Olaf's childhood was. Maybe he was an orphan like she was. Maybe the misery of his childhood caused him to turn into the miserable adult he was now.

Another stark realization came up in her mind. If she allowed this misery and deep despair to destroy her soul, she would end up like Count Olaf. She would end up as twisted and cruel as him if she allowed her self pity to turn into anger. She vowed to keep sane for her sake, and for her sibling's sakes as well.

As the night passed, she found that beneath her initial hatred for the evil Count, she felt immense pity and sadness for the man that could be brought back, if he found his way out of the darkness. Then suddenly she felt as if she was standing on a cliff and Count Olaf was staring up at her. That cliff was the borderline of sanity and insanity. He couldn't get her up there for he'd already fallen.

Violet saw that to release his demons, he needed someone to torment, someone to unleash the pain he wished so badly would go away. Count Olaf had once been a good man. Violet herself couldn't believe it, but it must have been true. If he would only let her get close enough to help him.

Violet saw a man who tried to function in a normal society and failed. She found that she was no longer afraid.

That morning however, when she and Klaus found their beloved Uncle Monty's lifeless body, her anger at Count Olaf was renewed and for just a second, she stepped into the darkness and joined him.
