Author's note: This is based strongly on a Friends episode from Season Five - "the One With All The Resolutions".
Other notes (important): Harry and Hermione are secretly dating, and Ron is the only one who knows about it. Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, Ginny, and Luna are having a New Years party. (Oh, by the way, Harry and Ginny dated in the past before this fic takes place.)
Character parallels, to make it easier to understand:
Harry Chandler
Hermione Monica
Ron Joey
Luna Phoebe
Ginny Rachel
Neville Ross (go figure)
Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter (which is too bad, really), and I don't own Friends (that sucks, I love that show)
Harry and Hermione stood together nervously, whispering as everyone started getting excited, some already counting down to midnight. Ron noticed this and headed towards them.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"Well, we wanted to kiss at midnight," Harry explained, and Hermione nodded. "But no one else is going to, so..."
"I'll take care of it." And with that, Ron strode off.
"No - wait -" Hermione said helplessly after him. She turned to Harry. "What's he going to do? It's only about a few minutes to midnight."
Harry shrugged, watching Ron rush over to Ginny.
"Ginny," Ron muttered. "You're kissing Neville at midnight."
"Why?" she asked, looking a little confused.
"Well, we're all kissing at midnight," Ron explained. "You know, it's a tradition. And you can't kiss me; I'm your brother. And you can't kiss Harry because of your history, you know."
"Oh," Ginny nodded. "Well, okay, I guess."
Ron found Luna next. "Luna," he said. "You're... kissing me at midnight." Oh, what he did for his friends.
Luna cocked her head to one side curiously. "Why on earth would you want to do that?"
"Er, well..." Ron stammered. "It's a tradition, you know. Good luck. It also, uh... wards of those pesky nargles, you know."
"Really?" she asked, looking interested now. "Well, all right then."
Okay, now it was just Neville he had to tell. "Neville!" he said when he reached him, speaking quickly. "You're kissing Ginny at midnight."
"How come?" he asked, looking even more confused than Ginny had.
"Well, it's a tradition," Ron explained, again. "And Hermione's kissing Harry, and I've already got Luna, so..."
"I guess that's okay, then," Neville said, turning a little pink. "Ginny is pretty, after all..."
"Watch it," Ron said, suddenly becoming protective.
"Sorry."
Ron turned to Harry and Hermione, who were across the room, and gave them the thumbs up.
"Five," the six of them yelled. "Four! Three! Two! One!"
They all cheered. Neville gave Ginny a quick, embarrassed peck, and she blushed. Ron went back to Luna and she leaned in, closing her eyes, and he kissed her quickly.
Turning to Harry and Hermione, he watched them pull away, her arms around his neck. He smiled, then went back towards them.
"You're welcome," he said, grinning. "Not only did I kiss Luna, but I even had to tell Neville to kiss my sister!"
"Thank you," Hermione said.
"Yeah, thanks," Harry said. "And Happy New Year!"
