He was beginning to think it would never stop raining. It had been alternating between a light drizzle and violent thunderstorms all week until everything seemed damp and heavy and it was all Kyo could do to drag himself out of bed in the morning.
Shigure laughed at him as he stumbled around the house like a zombie and Yuki looked scornful and muttered something about lazy cats, but it was really no laughing matter. He had classes to go to and homework to do and after a week of having the energy slowly sapped out of him, he could barely think straight. When it rained, it was like something inside him went "I can't deal with this; wake me when it stops" and tried to sleep and the rest of him was left fighting to stay conscious until it was hard to do much else.
That was pretty much what was happening, as a matter of fact. He was always aware of the Cat possessing him no matter how hard he tried to ignore it, but he never felt its presence more keenly than when it was cold and raining. He never had to fight so hard to be able to pretend to be normal as he did when all the demon wanted to do was be a cat and sleep through the bad weather.
He wondered if the others ever felt like that, as though the spirit that possessed them was trying to take control and they had to consciously fight to prevent it. He suspected they didn't; it was probably just another side benefit of being the Cat. At any rate, he didn't ask. Why remind them yet again that he was different?
It was raining harder now, the wind howling and slamming the water against the side of the house. Anger lending him energy for a moment, Kyo started doing crunches, and his body (because it was the demon's body, really) screamed in protest, but he didn't stop. He was too tired even to stand up, but this was at least some small act of defiance.
You won't beat me that easily, he thought, but his breath was rasping in his throat and he knew it was a lie. He'd been beaten the moment he was born.
