Rinoa was interrupted by the Headmaster.
" Squall," he said, with a disapproving look on his face, " I was happy to see you stick up for someone in there." He paused. " But, if I were you, I wouldn't have taken the action you did."
" But you're not me." he replied quietly. 'Did I actually say that?!' he thought, surprised he said anything at all.
Cid nodded. " I understand that. I know Almasy probably deserved what he got," he added, " But you are the commander of this Garden, and this is behavior unbecoming for someone in your position."
" He was only protecting me, Headmaster!" Rinoa interrupted, stepping forward. " Seifer was hurting me, and he noticed that he was drunk, and he saved me." She looked at Squall, and slightly grinned. 'I hope that helped...' she thought.
Cid's face completely changed. " Miss Heartilly!" he exclaimed, " I had no idea..." He turned to face Squall. " My apologies, Commander." he said, actually bowing to Squall, and walking back into the auditorium.
Squall stared at Rinoa. ' What's so special about her, anyway?' he thought, 'Cid completely changed his mind when she said I saved her...'
Rinoa smiled. " You're welcome, Squall." she said, and she walked to her dorm room.
' Should I have thanked her?' he thought, a bit puzzled. ' I saved her, but did she really save me?' After a moment of contemplating, he replied, almost shouting, " Thank you."
Rinoa stopped walking. " That's a start." she whispered to herself, continuing her way. As she walked, she heard what she could only guess to be Selphie's footsteps running up behind her.
" Rinny!" she gasped, " You won't believe what just happened! Squall just thanked you! He NEVER does that!!!"
" Why is that so hard to believe?" she asked, and Selphie gasped again.
" Rinoa, he hardly talks to anyone, but he'll talk to you, he calls you by your first name on your first day here, and to top it all off, he wouldn't even dance with Ellone, but he danced with you, and only you, and I saw," she added, drawing a breath before she finished the thought, " I saw him staring deep into your eyes, and he was so contently staring that he didn't even hear Cid calling for him, or Ellone calling his name. He just danced." By now, both girls' eyes were wide. " Rinoa, can't you see what's happening?"
" What?" she asked shakily, hoping she would say the words she wanted to hear. She could feel her heart starting to pound, her stomach got fluttery, and then Selphie replied,
" I think he has the flu." She nodded her head in belief as she spoke. Rinoa sighed.
' I thought she was smarter than that...' she thought, walking into her room, ' Or, maybe I'm just that blind because I want to be.'
" Rinny?" Selphie asked, a little worried, " Are you okay?"
Rinoa shrugged, and closed the door to the bathroom. She washed her face. ' I wish he loved me...' she thought, ' I was hoping he did, and that Selphie agreed with me, but I guess I'm stupid. I can't see past my own nose.' She dried her face with a towel. ' Then again, it's been a long night. Maybe I'm just imagining things.' She paused. ' Or maybe Selphie's tired...or maybe...' Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door.
" Rinny, how much longer are you going to be?!" Selphie cried, " I really have to go NOW!!!"
Rinoa quietly chuckled. " I'll be out in a sec!" she replied, fixing the braid she had put her hair in. She opened the door. As soon as she did, Selphie flew in, and pushed her out, slamming the door.
" You're quite welcome, Selph!" Rinoa replied, a bit peeved. ' I know she had to go, but did she have to shove me out the door?' Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. Rinoa opened it.
" Hi, Rinoa." Quistis said, " I just thought I might suggest you get some rest soon. You never know when you might have a pop quiz."
Rinoa laughed. " You know I'm not your student anymore," she replied, " and, if I was, then you could get in trouble for warning me about tomorrow's pop quiz!"
Quistis played stupid. " I never said we would actually have a pop quiz..." she replied, scratching her head, " I just said you should rest. Just in case."
" Yeah, right." she replied, yawning. " In any case, I'm not a student anymore, so I don't have to go to class."]
" I know that," Quistis replied, " But you might be called off to your first mission tomorrow."
" And how would you know?" Rinoa asked, only leaving the door cracked.
" I don't," She replied, " But I have a lot of experience, and I know that you should always be prepared."
" Okay, okay, I was already going to go to bed before you so rudely interrupted." Rinoa teased, starting to shut the door.
" Oh, and Rinoa?" she added, " I saw you and Squall tonight. I've never seen him enjoy himself so much."
She opened the door a bit more. " Really?" she asked softly. " What does that mean, exactly?"
" I think you know what I mean." she replied, pausing for effect. " Squall has the flu."
" Why does everyone say that?!" Rinoa exclaimed, and Quistis laughed.
" That's our code," she replied, " What it really means is, 'Squall's in love', girl, and for you, that should be a dream come true"
Rinoa grinned from ear to ear. " You have no idea." she sighed, " But why the code?"
" Well," Quistis said, lowering her voice, " Squall can appear from out of nowhere. We just don't notice him until it's too late. So Selphie, and I made a code, so he won't know what we're saying. Especially in your case. He's a very secretive guy, and he doesn't let anyone know what he's feeling."
Rinoa chuckled. " I will." she said, determined. Quistis only shook her head.
" You don't know what you're getting into, Rin." she stated, turning to walk away. " See you in the morning."
" Night." she replied, shutting the door. Selphie was waiting for her, grinning.
" So, now you know part of our code." she said happily, " And you know that I wasn't just being dimwitted when I said he had the flu."
Rinoa laughed, and grabbed a pillow. She fwapped her with it. Selphie whined. " Hey!" She started to reach for a pillow, when Rinoa said, " I'm going to sleep." She carried the pillow to her bed, and flopped down. She pulled the covers tightly around her, and slowly fell asleep.

The next morning, in the cafeteria, Zell was busy bragging about the girl at the dance.
" Yeah, she was pretty hot," he said, leaning back, " But I turned her down."
" Why?!" Irvine asked, and Selphie slapped his arm, glaring at him.
" Because I'm waiting for someone else." Zell replied quietly, hoping no one would hear.
The table ooed and aahed. " So, who's the lucky one?" Irvine asked, and Selphie glared at him again. He gave her a sad look. " What?" he asked, no realizing that he was acting single again.
" Maybe we need to talk after breakfast, Irvine." she said cooly, and he sat up.
" We do?" he asked, a bit nervous.
" We'll talk later, okay?" she said quietly, changing the subject, " So, who's the girl?"
Zell, hoping he was free and clear, sighed. " Well, uh, it's kinda...complicated..." he started nervously.
Rinoa noticed he was uncomfortable. " It's probably the lunch lady," she replied, " After all, she's the one who cooks the hot dogs!"
The table burst into laughter. Zell shot a thank-you glance at Rinoa, and she nodded. She would grill him over the details later.
After a few more minutes, the morning announcement was made. The request for all SeeD was made for 10am sharp. Rinoa sat up. 'Did Quistis really know?' she thought.
Quistis scratched her head. " I knew it would happen..." she said, " I got that feeling again last night, and somehow, I knew." Everybody looked at her. She glanced around, and angrily asked, " What are you guys looking at?!"
Rinoa got up, shaking her head. She walked out of the cafeteria, and ran into Xu. She smiled. " Ah, just the person I was looking for!" she exclaimed, " You uniform is in. I was about to give it to you." She handed Rinoa a neatly folded uniform.
She looked at the clothes, and took them happily. " Thank you for your hospitality, Xu." she said.
" Sure." she replied, " Say...I was wondering..."
" Yeah?" Rinoa asked.
" Can I have an autographed copy of your CD?" Xu asked quietly, smiling. " When it comes out?"
She frowned. " I'm not coming out with an album." she replied, " Sorry." 'Where the hell is that rumor coming from, anyway?' she thought, a bit annoyed.
Xu seemed disappointed. " Oh," she replied, " Okay, that's fine..." She perked up a bit, " Well, just in case, will you keep me in mind if you ever do?"
Rinoa nodded. " Sure!" she replied, hurrying off to her dorm. Xu did a little hop in the air. ' Great!' she thought.

As soon as Rinoa changed, she checked her clock. ' Almost ten...' she thought, leaving to go to the elevator. ' I wonder what kind of mission it will be? I hope it isn't too hard...what if I'm not ready?' She shook her head. ' If I wasn't ready, they wouldn't have made me a SeeD...So I must be ready...' She stepped up to the elevator, and pushed the button with the arrow pointing up. ' Yeah, I'm ready for whatever comes.' The doors opened, and she saw that Zell was already in the elevator. 'Perfect.' she thought, stepping inside, and pushing the button for the third floor. " Hey Zell."
He looked up. " Hey, Rinoa!" he replied. " 'Sup?"
She shrugged. " Not much since this morning, actually." she replied. " Hey, Zell...do you trust me?"
He gave her a funny look. " Sure, I guess..." he replied, " Why?"
" Well, I wanted to know...who your mystery girl is." she replied, " I swear to you I won't tell!"
Zell groaned. " How do you know it won't slip out?!" he asked.
" Because," she replied, thinking fast, " I have a secret, too, and I'll tell you if you tell me who she is."
Zell thought for a moment. 'What have I got to lose?' he thought. " I really like...Selphie." he replied, " But she loves Irvine."
Rinoa thought of the argument she left in her dorm, and she shook her head. 'I wouldn't count on that...' she thought. " Well, I bet if you told her, you might be surprised." she replied.
Zell shook his head. " No way!" he replied, " No way am I going to tell her with Irvine in the way! I'd don't wanna be shot while I'm on a mission, or even in my dorm!"
Rinoa laughed. " Irvine's your friend," she insisted, ' And I promise you that he won't try to kill you if you just explain to him first."
Zell groaned. " You mean, I have to tell Irvine, TOO?!" he whined.
" It's really not that hard..." she started, when he interrupted.
" Yeah, so when are you gonna tell Squall?"
Rinoa froze. ' He just had to say that, didn't he?' she thought nervously. " When the time is right..." she started, " When I know him better."
Zell laughed. " That means never," he replied, " Squall doesn't let anyone know him well enough to like him."
' Why does everyone say that?' she thought, 'I know him enough to practically love him, but they say that he won't let anyone know him! I'm finding out more about him everyday!'
" So, Rin," he said, " What was your secret?"
The elevator stopped. Rinoa thought that they were at the third floor, but Zell had only pushed the emergency stop. " You promised." he added.
She sighed. " You're right..." she replied, " The truth is, I'm really kind of a singer. I came here to aviod being stalked." she paused. " And to stay away from my overprotective father. He would never guess that I'd become a SeeD."
Zell stood, frozen, with his mouth practically touching the floor. " Caraway?" he asked, thinking of her father. She nodded. " GENERAL CARAWAY IS YOUR DAD?!?!" he asked, and Rinoa nodded.
" Not so loud, though, okay?" she asked.
" I can't believe your dad is Caraway!' he repeated. he paused. " Heartilly...JULIA?!" he asked, surprised again.
Again, she nodded. " That was my mother. I guess I sort of inherited her voice..." she said quietly. She hadn't seen her mother since she was really little, and everytime someone even said her name, she couldn't help but miss her.
" Talk about Twilight Zone..." Zell mumbled, hitting the button for the third floor again.
"What do you mean by that?" she asked, interested.
" If you really want to know," he replied in a warning tone, " I suggest you ask Squall about Laguna Loire and Julia Caraway." He became silent after that, and a second later, they had reached the third floor.

After everyone had arrived, Headmaster Cid stepped forward. " We have been called on a mission," Cid said, " I leave the details to our Commander, Squall Leonhart. Squall." he said, stepping back. Squall stepped forward.
" We have recieved a request to dispatch SeeD to destroy an enemy intelligence base set up by the Galbadians." he said, " The man who hired us is a General himself. It is a bit of an unusual request, but we've accepted it. We will dispatch about thirty SeeD (and that is an estimate) for this mission. His name is General Caraway."
Rinoa almost choked. " WHAT?!" she hissed under her breath. " Is he CRAZY?!" She noticed Zell giving her a sympathetic look.
" Please step forward as your names are called." Squall said, and Cid began reading names in alphabetical order. Rinoa prayed for him to skip the H's. at one point, he came to one, but stopped. He read the next name, and then added Selphie to the list well after he'd reached the last name. Selphie jumped up and down. " Woo-hoo!" she shouted, then realizing that Rinoa wasn't going. She hugged her.
" It's okay," she replied, " We won't be gone long."
" I know..." Rinoa said, glad that her name wasn't on the list. Or, was it? Cid had skipped a name, she knew he did. But, was it her?

Author's Note: First of all, to clear the confusion, I thought I should let you know that 'fwap' or, 'fwapping' are expressions that I use when someone is hit. " I can't believe your dad is Caraway!' he repeated. he paused. " Heartilly...JULIA?!" he asked, surprised again.
Again, she nodded. " That was my mother. I guess I sort of inherited her voice..." she said quietly. She hadn't seen her mother since she was really little, and everytime someone even said her name, she couldn't help but miss her.
" Talk about Twilight Zone..." Zell mumbled, hitting the button for the third floor again.
"What do you mean by that?" she asked, interested.
" If you really want to know," he replied in a warning tone, " I suggest you ask Squall about Laguna Loire and Julia Caraway." He became silent after that, and a second later, they had reached the third floor.

After everyone had arrived, Headmaster Cid stepped forward. " We have been called on a mission," Cid said, " I leave the details to our Commander, Squall Leonhart. Squall." he said, stepping back. Squall stepped forward.
" We have recieved a request to dispatch SeeD to destroy an enemy intelligence base set up by the Galbadians." he said, " The man who hired us is a General himself. It is a bit of an unusual request, but we've accepted it. We will dispatch about thirty SeeD (and that is an estimate) for this mission. His name is General Caraway."
Rinoa almost choked. " WHAT?!" she hissed under her breath. " Is he CRAZY?!" She noticed Zell giving her a sympathetic look.
" Please step forward as your names are called." Squall said, and Cid began reading names in alphabetical order. Rinoa prayed for him to skip the H's. at one point, he came to one, but stopped. He read the next name, and then added Selphie to the list well after he'd reached the last name. Selphie jumped up and down. " Woo-hoo!" she shouted, then realizing that Rinoa wasn't going. She hugged her.
" It's okay," she replied, " We won't be gone long."
" I know..." Rinoa said, glad that her name wasn't on the list. Or, was it? Cid had skipped a name, she knew he did. But, was it her?
