Chapter 15

Squall stared dreamily, as Rinoa began singing her first song for him.

Simple and Clean

You're giving me too many things

Lately you're all I need

You smiled at me and said,

Don't get me wrong I love you

But does that mean I have to meet your father?

When we are older you'll understand

What I meant when I said "No,

I don't think life is quite that simple"

When you walk away

You don't hear me say please

Oh baby, don't go

Simple and clean is the way that you're making me feel tonight

It's hard to let it go

The daily things that keep us all busy

Are confusing me

That's when you came to me and said,

Wish I could prove I love you

But does that mean I have to walk on water?

When we are older you'll understand

It's enough when I say so

And maybe some things are that simple

repeat

Hold me

Whatever lies beyond this morning

Is a little later on

Regardless of warnings the future doesn't scare me at all

Nothing's like before

repeat

repeat

repeat

Everyone applauded. Rinoa bowed, smiling. " That song was written and performed beforehand by an idol of mine, Utada Hikaru! I love her so much!" She paused, singling out Squall, and sharing a reserved smile for him. " But, this last song is dedicated to you, Squall Leonhart. I hope you recognise the words." She sat down at the piano, which was wheeled in, and she sat down. Some said that she reminded them of her mother, but she didn't care. She played the first few notes, then paused for a minute, laughing softly. Then, she started over again.

Promises

Remember that night,

with the stars and the moon,

You had vowed to stay by my side?

You said it would be forever

Things have changed with time

And some things may be different

But I remember your words

And I hold them close

I still believe

Chorus:

You promised me that night

The beautiful words of hope

Vowes of love eternal

And dreams of our future

Promises are only promises

But when you hold them close

They become so much more

I'll be waiting here

The days pass by

The nights are long

But I never forget

I sit on my bed and wait

For you, love

I want to see your face

Not just when I dream

But it seems so far off

I still love you

And I always will

Chorus

Bridge:

I'll be waiting here

(Will you come?)

I'm still waiting here

(Will you find me?)

I'll wait forever for you

(Will you run to me?)

I'll never leave until you're with me

(Will you come with me?)

Chorus

I'm waiting here for you

And I always will be

There was a moment of silence. Everyone cheered and applauded, but Rinoa and Squall didn't notice any of them. He understood what she had just said, and recognized everything.

'She still remembers what I vowed...' he thought, wishing for nothing more than everyone to disappear from the room. He blinked, though, and, suddenly, she was gone. '...What??' he thought, dazed. 'Where?'

Suddenly, someone grabbed his arm, and pulled him out of the crowd. It happened so fast, he didn't even realize who it was until a door shut behind him, and he felt a soft kiss playing on his lips. He understood, and kissed Rinoa back.

" I missed you SO MUCH..." she whispered.

" I missed you, too..." he replied, kissing her again, harder than before. " God, Rinoa, I thought I'd never see you again!"

" Thankfully, my father doesn't realize I've been friends with my bodyguard," she said, smothering him with a wave of kisses.

" Who?" he asked between them.

" Irvine Kinneas." she replied, pulling him close.

" Oh." he replied, kissing her so passionately, she was almost afraid he might be dying. She pulled back for a moment.

" Sweetheart, breathe." she said, smiling at him.

He laughed. " I don't need to." he replied, kissing her again.

She kissed him back happily, just grateful that she was there with him.

Meanwhile, Irvine stood guard in front of the dressing room. Seifer walked up.

" Where's Rinoa?" he asked.

" Inside," he replied, " And she specifically requested no visitors."

" On who's authority do you have to protect her?' he asked.

" The General's of course." he replied, " You've been sacked, partner."

Seifer, grumbling, walked off.

Irvine, still undefeated, continued on guard, grinning.

Rinoa and Squall were talking about how horrible life seemed when they were apart, when there was a specific knock on the door. " Irvine?" she called.

" It's me." he replied, slipping in. He locked the door behind him. " I'm sorry, Princess, but your time's up. You're expected back in an hour, and that's about as long as it's going to take for us to get you home."

Rinoa looked sadly at Squall. " I'm so sorry..." she sighed.

For one, he managed to caress her face before she got the opportunity. " Don't worry," he replied, " I'll see you again."

Rinoa's thoughts wandered to that strange dream. " I'll be waiting here..." she repeated. Irvine thought of the song, but was soon confused.

Squall sat up. " Where?" he asked.

" I'll be 'Here', so," she replied. " If you come here, you'll find me..."

" I'm coming." he replied, dazed.

She rose. " I'm sorry..." she repeated, " I'll be waiting..." She followed Irvine out the door.

As soon as the door closed, Squall sighed. 'I'll be 'here'...' she had said. The problem was, he didn't know where that was. But he would have to find out, if he ever wanted to see her again.
