Chapter 18
Rinoa's Story
"I had a dream. It was a scary dream. We make a promise. We promised to see shooting stars together. I get dressed up and put on your ring. But the thing is, I can't remember where I'm supposed to meet you. I start to panic. I really want to see you, Squall, but I don't know where to go. I start running through the mountains, the desert, the plains...Through Timber, Balamb and Galbadia...When I realize I can't run any longer...I...I just want to see you so badly...So I scream, Squall, where are you!? And then I was crying."
----
Just as she had been crying in her dream, tears were streaming down her face as she spoke. Squall convinced her into his lap. She sniffled, and looked at him apologetically. "I'm sorry. You don't have to say anything." she said quietly, "I just felt like I had to tell you."
"It was just a dream..." he replied soothingly, "It doesn't mean anything. Don't worry about it."
"...I guess you're right." she replied after a moment, " But, that wasn't the end of my dream." She continued:
----
" I was here, in this field, exhausted from running, from screaming. It hurt so much, because I couldn't find you. I collapsed in the flowers. But, suddenly, I heard your voice.
You said, "I'll be here..." So, I sat up, and looked around. But I couldn't see you. So I cried out, "...Why?" I thought that maybe you would come to me if I kept talking, if I kept asking.
"I'll be here, looking for you." You replied. " If I come here, I can find you. I will find you. I promise."
"I'll be here, too!" I cried out, " I won't leave until you come find me!"
----
Rinoa sighed. " That dream scared me so much..." she whispered weakly. " I couldn't stand the thought of running, looking for you, and then waiting, hoping you knew where I was. So, I showed you my field, from my dream. I knew you would come find me, if only you knew where to look." She paused, and slightly grinned. " And, here you are."
" Here I am." Squall echoed, brushing his hand against her cheek. She reached up, and took his hand, smiling. " I am so glad," she said seriously, " That you knew how to find me."
" I'm glad you showed me how." he replied, looking deep into her eyes again. They shared a loving smile, followed by a grateful kiss. When they looked into the sky, they realized that the entire day had gone by, and the first star was making an appearance. Rinoa smiled wistfully.
" Remember that night at the Garden?" she asked, " When I made you wish on a star?"
Squall smiled. " Yeah."
She chuckled softly. " Those were good times. Before my father found out where I was."
Squall paused. 'The General is VERY angry...' Cid's voice echoed. " Rinoa..." he said.
" Yeah?" she asked innocently.
He took a deep breath. " I knew you were missing because your father called the Headmaster." he said. " He's-well..."
" Really mad." she finished for him, sighing. " He always is. He can never be happy unless things go exactly the way he wants." She looked up at the lone star. " He wants me to be my mother, performing for people, and loving it. Well, I don't want that. He doesn't want to admit it, but my mother and I didn't exactly have the same dreams. She wanted to make people smile with music and song. I want them to smile...because things are better. Things are peaceful. Not because I sing to them. Is that a crime?"
" I think that's noble." Squall said, smiling again.
" My father doesn't think so." she replied, frowning slightly. " He thinks that my dream is impossible. Well, it may be impossible, but I think that there's more point to pursue that dream than to go around telling people what to believe, what to want." She sighed. " But, he never lets me tell him. He's always insisting that I practice."
Squall thought for a moment. " You should tell him." he said, determined.
" But how am I gonna get him to listen?" she asked, doubtful.
" I'll help you." he replied.
" But, Squall..." she started.
" Your father has ignored your feeling a lot, right?" he asked.
Rinoa was taken aback. " Squall, are you okay?" she asked.
" Hasn't he?" he asked again.
" Well, yes, Squall," she started, " But what-"
" You need to tell him." he replied, standing up.
Rinoa stood. " Are you sure you're okay, Squall?" she asked again, unsure.
" I'm fine." he replied, " But I think I need to talk to him, too. It's late," he added, " We need to get going."
