Chapter 20

Squall stood at the main gate of the Caraway mansion. He knew what he had to do, but first, he had to find out why the General hated him so much. Sure, he already knew the man feared the power his father had, but there was something else. The General had more than just fear of his father, he could see the hatred in his eyes that night. So, taking a deep breath, he walked down the walkway, up to the front door. He rung the bell, and a moment later, the door opened.
" May I help you, sir?" the butler stated. He had gotten used to saying the same things over again; it wasn't a matter of asking or replying anymore.
" I would like to speak to the General." he replied, " Tell him that Commander Leonhart is here."
" Very good, sir." the butler said, letting Squall enter the main hall. " I shall inform the General."
" ..." Squall was tempted to start looking around again, but he forced himself to just stand and wait. He looked at the painting on the wall of Julia. 'She looks a little like Rinoa.' he thought, his thoughts flying to how Rinoa was, back at the Garden. He wondered what she was doing, but quickly began to think of the situation at hand. He had perfect timing, since the butler returned.
" The General is busy." he informed him.
" I just need a moment of his time." Squall replied.
" Sir," the butler repeated, " The General is busy."
" I don't care." Squall insisted, " This is a matter of urgency, and-"
" What do you want with me?" The General interrupted, stepping out of the Study. " What could possibly be so urgent?"
" General," Squall said, stepping forward, " I need to know-"
" What?" he barked. " What do you want?! You're not here for important SeeD buisiness, are you?"
" I never said I was, sir." he replied, " This is strictly on a personal level."
" Then get it over with, boy!" the General replied, quickly growing angry.
" I want to know what the history is between you and Laguna Loire." he said.
The General froze. " Never," he replied, " EVER speak that name in this house." He walked back into the Study.
Squall shrugged. " ...Whatever." he said, starting to walk out the door. He didn't know what else to say. The only other option was to ask his father.
" Wait." a voice said behind him. He turned to see the maid. " Come with me," she said, walking out into the Garden. Puzzled, he followed her. When he caught up to her, she looked around to make sure they were out of sight. " The General hates it when people bring up President Loire," she said quietly. " It wasn't very wise of you to come asking about their history."
" But my father has no idea why the General loathes him," he replies, " I only know a little bit; something about how they both wanted something, and the General got it...?"
Maria nodded, and looked in the window, viewing the portrait of Julia. " It was Lady Julia," she replied. " President Loire had met her before the General had. He was a soldier, and enjoyed going to the hotel to hear her play the piano. Lady Julia told me. He had promised to come hear her sing one day, but he never did. That was when she met the General." The maid sighed, shaking her head sadly. " There were arguments. Late at night, when Miss Rinoa was asleep, but there were arguments. Lady Julia still cared about her soldier, and it drove the General mad. No matter what he did, she always was fond of her soldier. She never forgot him, and it made the General jealous." She paused. " That's all I can remember. If there's anything else, I'm afraid I can't help-"
" No, that was fine, thank you." Squall said awkwardly, finding an exit to the main gate. The entire drive back to the Garden, he couldn't stop thinking about what he had learned. 'My father and Rinoa's mother? MY father and HER mother...Why didn't anyone ever tell me? It doesn't change anything, though. Just, now I know why the General is against me and Rinoa'
-
Meanwhile, back at the Garden, Rinoa and Selphie were in the Training Area, battling Ochu. They had been at the battle for a few minutes, and Selphie decided to let Rinoa finish it off. Rinoa cast Fire on it, but that still didn't finish it. " Are we going to be at this all day?!" Selphie shouted, quickly casting Fira. That did the trick, and the Ochu fell. Rinoa sat down, seemingly far off.
" What's up, Rin?" Selphie asked. " You're kinda...off today."
" Squall went out for a drive," she replied, " And I can't help but worry about where he went. He wouldn't tell me, and that can only mean one thing..."
Selphie sat down next to her. " What's that?"
" I think he went to see my father." she said, her voice growing angry toward the end.
" Why would he do that?" Selphie asked.
" I don't know," she replied, " But it's a feeling I have. Don't ask me why, I just have it."
The two sat in silence for a moment. " Now what?" Selphie asked.
" How about another round?" Rinoa asked.
Selphie stood up, shaking her head. " No way!" she replied, " You're waaaay too spacey today!"
Rinoa laughed. " Then I don't know!" she sighed. She still thought of Squall, hoping that he wasn't talking to her father. She couldn't help but worry what her father would do to him this time. ' But he didn't DO anything to him last time...' she remembered, 'That was me'
" Rin? Yoohoo!"
Rinoa returned to reality. Selphie was waving a hand in her face. " Are we awake here?" she asked.
" Yeah, Selph." she replied.
Selphie put her hands on her hips. " Be glad we just left the Training Area!" she giggled, " If you were in a battle like that, ooh, scary!" She continued talking, but Rinoa's mind began to wander again.
'I still don't know what to do about that...it's not like I can control Ultimecia...what she can do through me...it's too much. I don't think I can go on with that risk. I don't want to hurt anyone again'
" RINOA!"
Rinoa jumped, which made Selphie laugh.
" Wake up, Rin!" she repeated, skipping backwards in front of her friend.
Rinoa shook her head. " You are too much, Selphie!" she laughed. " Don't ever do that again, though, okay?"
Selphie shook her head. " I will if it's neccesary!" she replied, laughing back.
Rinoa slightly pinched her friend's arm. " OW!" Selphie squeeled, pinching her back harder.
" HEY!" Rinoa replied, pinching her again. " Meanie!"
Selphie pinched her really hard, and this time she ran off.
" GET BACK HERE!" Rinoa yelled, chasing after her. Even when she was running, though, her mind continued to wander. She was partly out of it as she ran. Ran into Squall, that is. She spotted him right before, and tried to stop. It was no use; she ran into him, and lost her balance. As she started to fall back, his hand reached out and grabbed her arm. As soon as she regained balance, he let go, only to put his arms around her.
When Squall helped her regain her balance, she looked frightened. The look was slightly familiar, almost the same as the first time she ran into him. She breathlessly tried to apologize. " I'm so sorry!" she cried, " I didn't mean to-Selphie, she pinched my arm REALLY hard, and-"
" It's okay," he replied, " You can relax."
She sighed, although she was still a little worried. But, that soon changed. " Where did you go?" she asked, a bit huffy.
'Oh, great, I should've known...' he thought to himself. " Out for a ride." he replied, hoping she would believe him.
" Out for a ride where?" she asked, tracing her finger on his jacket.
" No where, really." he replied, " I just felt like going out for a little while."
She looked up into his eyes, with a pensive look. " You aren't lying to me, are you, Squall?" she asked.
'Why?' he thought. " No, I'm not." he replied. It was partly true, because that's all it started out as. It just happened to get him thinking about that night, months ago.
" ...I believe you." she replied, smiling weakly. " Well...I've gotta go right now. Important girl stuff." 'Killing Selphie Tilmutt.' she added teasingly in her mind, grinning.
" ...Okay." Squall replied, letting her go. " Rinoa?"
" Yes?" she asked. She hardly ever said 'Yes' to anyone, usually just 'Yeah.
" Meet me tonight in the Secret Area?" he asked. " Too crowded." she replied. " A lot of people like to hang out there all of a sudden." She paused. " If you want a quiet place, maybe the beach?"
'Perfect.' " Sure." He thought for a minute. " Meet me there?"
" I can do that." she replied, grinning. " See you....after sunset?"
" After sunset." he repeated, waving slightly. He had to make sure everything was perfect, he didn't want anything to go wrong. Sunset gave him plenty of time.
Rinoa waved back, and, blowing him a kiss, she ran off in the opposite direction. 'I'll wait for you at your Dorm, Miss Tilmutt.' she thought, grinning wickedly. She hurried to the Dorms, while Squall walked to his office. He had to get something.
-
Hours passed by, and it was an hour past lunch. Selphie still hadn't come to her Dorm. Rinoa sighed, looking at her watch again. 'Where IS she?!' she thought, annoyed. 'Maybe I should give it up...' She paused. 'Zell! Maybe Zell knows where she is!' She started to run to the cafeteria. Zell stayed in the cafeteria a few hours after lunch started, so he could get as many hot dogs as he could. He always would beg the lunch lady for more.
As she ran, she made sure to focus on the clear path ahead, so she wouldn't run into anyone again. That had been embarrassing, even if it was Squall, not a total stranger. She slowed down to a fast walk as she entered the cafeteria. She looked around, searching for Zell. After a moment, she spotted him at a table in the far off corner. She jogged toward it, waving. " Zell!" she called. " Hey, Zell!"
Zell looked up, face full of hot dogs, and waved back. Suddenly, he doubled over, and Rinoa realized he was choking on a hot dog. She ran to the table now.
" Zell!" she said, trying not to overly panic. That might make him panic, and then choke to death. " Zell! Can you breathe?" He shook his head, pounding his fist on the table.
Rinoa balled her hand up into a fist, and began pounding on his back. " C'mon!" she cried, slamming her fist down on his back. That did it; she heard Zell gasp.
" Hyne, I thought I was gonna die there!" Zell wheezed. Rinoa chuckled weakly. " You okay now?" she asked.
" Yeah." he replied. " What's up?"
" Actually," Rinoa replied, " I was looking for Selphie. Have you seen her?" Zell shrugged, eating another hot dog, despite his 'near death experience'. " Nope. I was about to ask you the same, though."
Rinoa sighed. " Okay, thanks anyway." She started to walk off. " See ya around, then."
Zell waved again, finishing another hot dog. Rinoa rolled her eyes as she walked, heading out of the cafeteria.
'Where could Selphie be?!' she thought to herself. As she walked past the hall leading to the Dorms, she heard raised voices. She tried to ignore it, but they sounded familiar. She decided one little peek couldn't hurt.
" Sephie!" Irvine said, " Seriously, now, how could you?"
" This conversation is over, Irvine." she replied. " I already told you that we were just friends."
" Sephie! Please! Just give me a chance!" he cried.
She turned around, and threw her arms around him. 'What?!' Rinoa thought, shocked.
" I promise I'll always be here for you, Irvine Kinneas," she replied, " But I am in love with Zell, and you have to accept that. I can be your friend, but that's it. I know you'll find someone."
" Sephie..." Irvine started, but Selphie cut him off.
" That's enough, now." she said gently. " I've got to go now, okay?" She let him go, and started to walk off. Irvine looked upset, that was clear, but Selphie seemed a little upset as well. Rinoa ran off before she caught her eavesdropping.
-
Squall sat in his room, looking at what Laguna had brought for him. He was thinking about when he had asked for it. Laguna almost seemed proud that his son was asking him a favor.
" Good for you, son!" he had said. " I promise you I'll bring it tomorrow."
" Okay." Squall replied, " Just put it in something "
" Oh. Right." Laguna said, and Squall could almost hear a smile in his voice.
" Tomorrow then." he repeated, hanging up.
Squall now shook his head. 'Anything I could've done differently?' he thought. 'No.' He looked back down at the small parcel. 'Tonight.' he thought, looking out the window. It would soon be sunset. He put the parcel in his jacket pocket, and began walking to the beach.
-
Rinoa had also noticed how the time was flying. She had just torn her closet apart, trying to find something nice to wear. She decided on the long flowing dress she wore when they had watched the sunset together. She hurried and got changed, then made a mad rush for the beach. 'He seemed a bit distant today...' she thought. 'And Selphie? Wow...that was...unbelieveable. She can NEVER know that I saw that...' She continued walking. The ring on her necklace beat against her chest as her pace quickened. She hurried through the open plains, watching as the sun settled below the horizon. Stars had begun to appear, but only a few, and the sky was a slightly dark bluish-grey. She started running now, she didn't want to be alone in the dark. She kept thinking of how Squall was there, Squall was waiting. By the time her first foot hit the sand, she was running so fast, her foot slightly sank. She tripped, and fell in the sand. " Ow!" she cried. She started to get up, when someone behind her picked her up, and set her on her feet. She brushed off nervously, and looked up. She was face-to-face with Squall. " Squall..." she said softly.
" Are you okay?" he asked. She nodded. 'His eyes are shimmering tonight...' she thought, smiling.
He saw her smiling, and smiled back. " Rinoa..."
