And that made it alright

Disclaimer: I don't own CCS. If I did, it would have been much more angsty.

Sometimes, Tomoyo missed the longing.

That terribly sad, bittersweet angst that she would never be able to have her feelings returned by Sakura. Oh, it had ached, bitten, stung, yes, but it had been for Sakura, and that had made it alright.

She had always expected -- wanted -- Sakura to end up with Syaoran. He was a good boy, kind to her Sakura, and if Tomoyo couldn't have her, she'd thought, at least he would. Maybe, when they'd grown up and Sakura and Syaoran had gotten married, (Tomoyo had envisioned a gorgeous wedding for them, a sweet tux for Syaoran and the cutest dress ever for dear Sakura) Tomoyo could raise their children.

It had been a sad thought, at first, the idea of losing Sakura. But Sakura would be happy, and Syaoran would be kind, and their children would be adorable, so that was alright too.

She missed the longing, sometimes. The dreaming for what would never be. Such sad, sweet tears she'd cried! So selfless, all for her dearest Sakura.

But Syaoran had not ended up with Sakura. They had been children, after all, and who actually married their childhood sweetheart?

Sakura's tears had hurt, burned, and Tomoyo had tried her hardest to make them go away. But this could only happen when Sakura fell in love again; not replacing her love for Syaoran, not diminishing it, but still very much in love again. She fell once more, yes, after months of tears and heartache. She had smiled brightly, and Tomoyo's heart had burned.

The longing had been sweet, tragic, eternal.

Sakura turned over to face Tomoyo, beaming.

"I love you," she whispered, pulling her into a hug, "I don't know why I was so silly about it before. But I love you now. Really."

Sometimes Tomoyo missed the longing.

More often, Tomoyo marveled at the magic of the love it brought her.

"I love you too, Sakura-chan," Tomoyo whispered back.

And that made it alright.
