A/N: I know that I should be updating my other story but this idea came to me last night while I was trying to go to sleep. It's really short, but it's better than nothing. So here it is:
"Mommy?"
"What honey?" Sara asked sitting back down on her son's bed.
"Tell me about Daddy." The five-year-old said shifting in his bed to find a better position.
"We talked about this last night, Nicky."
"But I like hearing about him."
"Alright. From the beginning?" Sara asked
"From the beginning."
"Okay. Your daddy and I worked with each other for about six years before we realized we liked one another. So we decided to get married. Two years later you were born."
"July 4th." He stated sticking his chest out.
Sara couldn't help but notice how much he looked like his father when he did that. "That's right. Your birthday is on Independence Day. As a matter of fact, after you were born your daddy opened the blinds in the room and we watched to fireworks from the Strip. It was the first time it was just the three of us."
"I like watching fireworks."
"So did your daddy."
"What happened after we watched the fireworks?" Nicky asked.
"We decided to name you after him." Sara said.
"Why's that?"
"Because you looked so much like him." She said messing up his hair.
"Mommy!" Nicky said sitting up to try and fix his hair.
"What?" Sara asked as if she hadn't done anything.
"You messed my hair."
"You're going to bed anyway. Speaking of, it's getting late. Good night." Sara said as she stood up and kissed him on the forehead.
"Wait, Mommy. You haven't finished the story."
When Sara didn't make a move to sit back down on his bed, Nicky pleaded with her, "Please, Mommy. With sugar and cherries and that brown stuff you like-"
"Fudge." Sara interrupted.
"Yeah. And fudge on top." Nicky stuck his bottom lip out and gave her a pout, which again reminded her of his father.
"Okay. But only five minutes, then it's off to dream world for you buddy."
"Mommy?" Nicky asked his tone changing from pleading to serious.
"Yes, honey?"
"Do you think Daddy can be with me in dream world tonight, in case the monsters come back again?"
Sara pulled him into a hug and held him like that, gently rubbing circles on his back. "I think that all you have to do is think about Daddy and he'll be there, even if you're at school or if you get scared at night. He might not be here walking with us on Earth, but he's right here." She said pointing to his heart.
"Do you do that Mommy?" Nicky asked
"Do what, Baby?" Sara asked back. She started to gently rock back and forth to calm him down and get him to sleep.
"Think about Daddy."
Sara felt tears coming to her eyes. She held them back, wanting to be strong for Nicky, and said "Yes, Baby. Every day."
"I love you Mommy." Nicky said as he hugged her a little bit tighter.
"I love you too, Nicky."
"And I love Daddy."
"You know he loves you too. Now let's get you tucked back in." Sara helped Nicky get back under the covers and handed him his teddy bear. "Good night, Sweetie."
"Good night, Mommy. Don't let the bed bugs bite." He said sleepily.
Sara kissed him on the forehead again and walked toward the door. She turned around to see that Nicky had already fallen asleep. So she stood there for a few minutes, just watching him sleep. It never ceased to amaze her how much he was like his father, in his looks and in his mannerisms. She reluctantly turned and walked toward her room, leaving Nicky's door cracked in case he called for her.
It wasn't until after she changed into her pajamas and laid down under the covers that she started to softly cry. It wasn't the first time Sara cried herself to sleep and it wouldn't be the last…
