Overhead

Author's Notes: Just an ordinary day sort of drabble, nothing special at all. Some very mild Luffy/Zoro implications, but nothing concrete-- could simply be nakama happiness. ;)

The sun glimmers off the sails and over the polish of the wood, the leaves of the tangerine trees, and Zoro's swords.

They are making good wind today. From inside the kitchen, Sanji is making a disgusting array of flattering sighs as he serves Nami and Vivi drinks no doubt better than anything he's let the rest of the crew have. The sound of their laughter isn't so much false as it is gentle, and Zoro's shoulders slump in contentment at the quiet of it all. Even Luffy, gazing off to farther horizons than even they can see, is a nearly silent shadow draped across the figurehead-- every so often, he will make a breathless sort of giggle and Zoro's mouth will twitch in recognition.

Their captain is that man, he thinks, and closes his eyes again. The red haze of light hovers over his eyelids like a curtain.

Usopp and Chopper are re-coating the railings after they had been forced to repair them-- again, and Nami had threatened to tie Luffy to the anchor if he went around causing anymore damage. Zoro can catch the scent of fresh paint from the other side of the ship.

It's not a very exciting day. He has spent most of it sleeping, waiting for something to happen. On the Grand Line, something always happens eventually; that's what Zoro likes about it here.

"Your nose is turning red," Luffy's voice booms above him. Zoro opens one eye slowly, frowning at the wide, dark gaze hovering over his face. The straw rim of the hat brushes his forehead, it is so close.

"Shut up," he says. Luffy only laughs and sits beside him, his excited words blurring together as his shadow falls over Zoro. If there is anything to say, Zoro doesn't bother to do so-- he only snorts and lets his eyes flutter shut again against the newly arrived shade.

He falls asleep again to the ocean, to Luffy and the bubbling of soup in the kitchen just above them.
