The glass office door opened suddenly, and Dr. Lisa Cuddy strolled in and sat behind her desk. She ruffled through a few papers to make herself appear busy to the untrained eye. But what she was really doing was hiding the tears from her conversation with one of her employees, Dr. Gregory House. It had been another long day and her constant reminders for him to do his time in the clinic were in careful consideration for the patients. She understood that they could be annoying at times but he made a whole joke out of the thing. Lisa had always been a bit surprised that one of them hadn't dropped dead due to his lack of care. She considered herself to be an idiot to employ him. He only cured one or two people a week and his bedside manner was beyond a joke. He had always been quite jovial before the infarction. She knew it was a mistake to employ him, especially since the night they had spent together had meant more to her than she had cared to admit to anyone, even herself.
It had been a week since Vogler had left and taken his precious millions as well. Cuddy hadn't really forgiven herself for losing the money that could have been used to get more nurses and better equipment. Mainly since she had done it because she didn't want to lose House as a doctor, nor as a friend. She felt sort of guilty for having to pull out equipment that had been in storage for years during the meningitis outbreak. May as well have been House's fault for taking her to bed that night many, many years ago. She had never forgotten the way they had talked and laughed together with Wilson and Stacy all the time before the infarction. Every conversation they had was a remnant of the fun they had, every glib remark now caused a guilty reaction that made her think it was her fault about his leg, her fault that he had now become a senile old man. She had loved him once, truthfully: she still did. However, she could never admit it. Not with the hospital. It had been her life's work to get this far. She was one in three women to be in the same position. One that offered on a non-social life and having to put up with someone who had such a hatred for her.
Lisa wiped away the tears and stared down at the paper she had just signed, and slowly made her way up to the roof. Throughout her life she had tried to be better than anyone else, especially the boys. She had managed to make it out of school at the top of her class to find a world which was harsh to anyone female trying to succeed. But now here she was, standing at the top of her hospital, her one treasure. This was the only thing that meant anything to her anymore and she had failed it. Now there was nothing.
Tears streamed down her cheeks as she scrunched up the paper in her hand and she turned slightly as she heard the door closing.
He looked down at her with pity and wiped away a tear, "I love you." He whispered and it echoed with the breeze and she looked up and repeated the vow with the dignity she had learnt over her years as a female doctor.
House took her hands and kissed her gently and then taking a knee, he looked up at her in the same tradition as he had seen many times one the television. And with one breath, he uttered the words, "will you marry me?"
Lisa smiled slightly and helped him up, quietly, "but you just want free access to the fun-bags, don't you?" She gave a gentle laugh, " but sure."
THE END
