She wanted to tell him "NO" the first time. But she was too afraid that he'd leave.
She wanted him to kiss her the second time. But he skillfully avoided her lips. As if he was purposely trying to torture her.
She wanted him to stay the third time. But she was afraid he'd laugh at her hope. She'd learned a long time ago he didn't believe in that.
She wanted him to take her out to dinner after the fourth time. But she had been unable to finish her sentence before he told her no.
She wanted to tell him she liked him for more than sex after the fifth time. But she was afraid he'd tell her he didn't.
She wanted the sixth time to be the last. It almost was.
She wanted to make him sit and talk before the seventh time. They made it to the couch.
She wanted him out of her life forever after the eight time. She was so afraid she'd fall in love.
She almost got her wish after the ninth time. By then it was too late.
It was almost a year later that he appeared on her doorstep for the tenth time. Afterwards he'd told her he loved her.
"You're a little late." She had said, "I'm not sure if I can love you again."
