Hermione's List

Hair:

("Nothing too drastic," said Hermione.

"Oh, come on," Viola protested. "Hair's the best thing to go drastic on, because it always comes back."

"Hmmm. Good point. Let's see…")

color

("All one color," said Hermione.

"The streaks are fashionable," Viola pointed out. "And a little highlighting around your face would bring out those lovely cheekbones you hide so effectively."

Hermione raised a hand to her cheek, looking at Viola in surprise.

"Trust me," said Viola. "What's next?"

cut

("You must cut it," Viola said firmly. "Just to get it under control. I know the woes of curly hair myself, remember; I know whereof I speak. Your hair needn't be terribly short, but it needs shape.")

style

"That will follow from the cut," said Viola. "We'll get some ideas together before you go in."

Face:

("Yes, this means makeup," said Viola when Hermione looked mulish. "You might as well learn how to do it properly, so you have the option whenever the mood strikes. Knowledge is never a bad thing."

"You know me too well," said Hermione, resigning herself.

"It's just because I was the same way," said Viola. She grinned. "Going to pierce your ears?"

"I thought about it," said Hermione. "I'm not piercing anything else, that's for certain!"

"Ha ha," said Viola, flipping her own dangling stars. "You'll see…"

"No I won't," said Hermione with finality.)

Clothes:

("Just leave everything to me. I know my way around fashion better than you."

"Suddenly I'm very afraid."

"Don't be silly. I'll teach it all to you as we go along. Anyway, you wear a uniform for school, yes? I want you to look fantastic whenever you have a chance." Viola smiled encouragingly. "It makes you feel better, honestly," she cajoled.

Hermione thought of R – someone's reaction the first time she appeared for a Hogsmeade weekend fashionably dressed. "All right.")

Other details:

("You'll enjoy a manicure," said Viola. "Pedicure too. They're fun." She wriggled her sunset-colored toes in their bejeweled sandals.

Hermione nodded. "Not that color, though," she stipulated. "As for the rest of me, I've been doing a bit of yoga the last few weeks. I had an – accident – at the end of last term, and it's helping me recover. I'll just step it up."

"An accident?" Viola repeated, her excited smile fading. "What happened?"

"I really don't want to talk about it, Viola," said Hermione, rubbing away a flash of pain in her side. It was almost time for her daily round of potions. "It was bad."

"Oh, NeeNee." Gradually, Viola's smile returned. "Then this is like your being reborn!"

"A whole new Hermione," Hermione agreed, after a moment.

"At least on the outside," said Viola. "How about lavender for the nails?" She giggled as Hermione swatted her with the list.)
