Chapter Two
Mac kept to the shadows around the building, looking for an opening. There were guards on the roof, but none were looking his way. He couldn't see any security cameras, though that only made him all the more suspicious.
He picked up a pebble and threw it off to his left to make sure. No guns fired. A few of the guards looked up, but they all seemed lazy in some way. He nodded in satisfaction to himself and crept over to a window.
Let's see if it's locked... He put thin gloves over his hands and tried to pull the window open. Dumb, he knew, but there was no way he could think of to test if an alarm would go off other than this.
Nothing happened. He gulped. This whole thing screamed of "trap." But he forced himself forward, knowing if he didn't Sparta would probably never get out. She was bait but he was going to bite.

What do you mean by that?" She narrowed her white-green eyes, gaze locked on Murdoc. A sly smile crawled onto his features.
"You'll find out soon enough, my dear. Guards, take her to the course. We'll get her to talk one way or the other." The mock in his voice served to show what he meant: Torture. She lifted a lip in a snarl but allowed the two guards to grab her arms and drag her out of the room.
They entered a hall. It was hi-tech, white walls and white floors. There wasn't a bit of dirt in the place that she could see. The doors closed automatically behind her like an elevator door and there was a keypad with flashing buttons next to the entrance.
Two more doors could be seen along the corridor, each exactly the same. The fluorescent lights were so bright her eyes stung after being in the semi-dark room, but she wouldn't give her captors the satisfaction of seeing her wince. She could see there were no windows within eyesight, therefore no real light. Only artificial.
The guards continued as if they didn't notice how well she was assessing the situation. She tested the strength in their grip without so much as looking over at them. The steadiness of their walk, their height and weight….Perfect!
She rammed her shoulder into the man on her left. He let out an "oomph" of surprise and went into the wall. Before either could react, she did a facial knife-hand and snapped his jaw so hard it clicked. She finished with a palm-heel strike to his nose, knocking him out and breaking her target at the same time.
She turned to the other, ready, but found he had banged his head on the wall. Good.
An alarm went off. She ran, not sure where to go, but knew not to stay where she was. She looked down and made sure she wasn't leaving any kind of tracks and kept going after finding there were none.
She kept going until she reached the end of the corridor. There were two of the elevator-like doors to choose from. Knowing there was no way to tell which was best, she randomly picked the one to her left. It wouldn't open without a code, though. As quickly as possible she typed in random combinations. Nothing happened. She sucked in a breath and tried the other, completely aware that her captors might be able to find her from what she was doing. But there was no helping that. There was a noise behind her and she spun around, fists raised.

He sighed but climbed in. The one he had entered was the only visible window. White walls and fluorescent lights greeted him, elevator doors and keypads to either side. He furrowed his brows, knowing this was the place. Only HIT could make a run-down building look like a hi-tech laboratory.
Still no alarms. No security cameras. No sensors. No lasers. He shook his head, wary of her surrounding, and turned a corner. A very rare sight greeted him.
In the middle of the corridor lay two bodies. They were breathing, but raggedly. Armed with guns, and with bruises on their faces, it was obvious they were unconscious. One's nose was crooked, blood streaming from it and bruises already forming around the wound.
A smile threatened to take over his face, but he held it back. So maybe this girl was good. It wouldn't be the first time Phoenix surprised him. Like that time they had claimed Murdoc was back and got him to re-join Phoenix. His son had recently been killed in a car accident.
Wincing at the sudden memory of the phone call, he pressed on. This girl would be the same age as his son would be if he was still alive. So he couldn't lose Sparta, too, when she was in his care.
A voice sounded from speakers he couldn't see. "MacGyver! What a pleasant surprise. It seems your agent has caused a little trouble, no? Don't worry yourself, she'll be taken care of." Murdoc…uh-oh.
He shook his head and decided not to answer. He turned one last corner, glad Murdoc said nothing more. What he saw surprised him more than anything.
Sparta snarled and raised her fists, obviously ready to fight. He put up his hands to show he didn't mean any harm.
"Whoa! Take it easy there. I'm here to help. I'm with Phoenix. Sparta, right?" She hesitated but lowered her fists. He got the impression of a spring, pressed down but ready to come back up at any moment. That wasn't a very good thought.
"I'm Sparta," she confirmed in a flat voice. "And you?"
"MacGyver."
"Then, MacGyver, we need to get out of here. Do you know a way?"
He thought for a moment and nodded. They had nothing to lose. Maybe HIT would be careless and leave that window open again. He seriously doubted it, but hey. Having nothing to lose can make you desperate.
