This is just something I thought of and wrote down strait away. I don't have a beta or anyone reviewing this so sorry if it has some errors. It's set a few years after Serenity.

She Knew

River was Simon's mei mei, his little sister.

She was the little girl that made up stories and acted them out for him.

'She's distracting you from your studies,' His father scolded him.

But Simon liked them.

Sometimes she talked about peace, when they found peace she would find her prince and he would find his princess, Ami would wait until peace made the galaxy safe, then she would come and they'd live happily ever after.

This was Rivers favourite story, it never changed like the others.

River was the 14 year old child he'd bid farewell to as she departed for the Academy.

Her smile was bright and cheerful that morning then it flickered; only Simon noticed.

'What's wrong River?'

Her brow creased for a moment, then smoothed out.

'Nothing you boob.'

Nothing could stop River from getting what she wanted.

River was the broken teen he'd rescued from the Alliance.

She wasn't innocent anymore, but she was still very much a child.

She was crazy.

Paranoid schizophrenia, that was the technical term, except it wasn't.

She mumbled incoherently, mainly about the blue hands, but occasionally she would still talk about peace.

Now looking back on it Simon realised that she had known.

Even when she was a little girl, even when she first left for the academy, she had known what would happen.

And she let it.

She had to find peace – Serenity

Now Simon sat on a box on the bridge watching River dance with her little girl.

Her little baby, Ami-Jayne.

Kaylee sat next to him, her head resting on his shoulder.

She looked up at him and smiled, he had found his princess.

River had found her prince too.

At first he hadn't liked it but now, as he watched Jayne stride onto the bridge and give both his girls a kiss on the forehead, it didn't seem so bad.

River wasn't a child anymore; she was a mother, a lover, a woman.

But she was still Simon's mei mei, his little sister.
