Padmé knew exactly how she had gotten herself into this one. It was all her own fault, she really couldn't blame anyone else this time -- well, maybe Anakin was a little bit at fault. And there was no way she was getting out of it. There was just no going back from death, no matter what Palpatine -- the Emperor -- Darth Sidious -- whatever he called himself these days -- had to say about it. He was lying. Once you were dead, you were dead. Death was forever!
But she hadn't really meant to die, just to frighten Anakin so that he would surface from Vader. And it had worked, too! But it was too late. She could see him clearly, hear his thoughts as he willed her to return; only -- she couldn't now. Not now, not ever.
No, Anakin, no! she wanted to scream at him. The speeder! Pay attention! You'll... The crash drew her away from him; she felt Anakin withdraw to a tiny pinpoint of light, felt Vader's triumphant grasping of control, even as his living body was horribly mangled and mauled along with her own dead one. Good-bye, my Annie, always remember that, deep inside, you are a good man.
And Padmé Skywalker let her essence become one with the Force.
