Like Brothers on a Hotel Bed

Seth & Summer songfic to Brothers on a Hotel Bed by Death Cab For Cutie

You may tire of me as our December sun is setting
'Cause I'm not who I used to be
No longer easy on the eyes but these wrinkles masterfully disguise the youthful boy below

Summer poked at her mashed potatoes with her fork, leaving tiny holes in the beige, mushy mess. She hadn't eaten since lunch, but now she had lost her appetite. She stared at the empty chair across from her as she pushed her mashed potatoes towards her chicken. He was late. Again. And his food was getting cold.

Who turned your way and saw something he was not looking for
Both a beginning and an end
But now he lives inside someone he does not recognize
When he catches his reflection on accident

Finally, Summer threw her fork down, sending bits of mashed potatoes flying. She grabbed both plates and quickly covered them with Saran wrap and shoved them into the microwave.

Dinner's in the microwave, she scribbled on a Post-It and stuck it on the front. It was nearly nine, and she was tired. Just tired, tired, tired. Summer headed down the hallway and into their bedroom where she lay her exhausted body down.

On the back of a motor bike
With your arms outstretched trying to take flight
Leaving everything behind

It never used to be like this: the dinners for one and the nights where she cried herself to sleep. They were happy once. Seven months ago, he presented her with a simple, yet unbelievably beautiful ring. Soon after, they moved into a tiny apartment in Boston where they held each other close during the cold nights.

When Summer found out she was pregnant three months ago, words could not explain their happiness and joy. Seth wanted a Dave while Summer wanted an Alison. Seth handed Summer a single scoop of cookies 'n cream every night as they ended their 9 to 5 days compromising on baby names and deciding godparents.

They were so happy, waiting for the end of April.

But even at our swiftest speed we couldn't break from the concrete
in the city where we still reside
And I have learned that even landlocked lovers yearn for the sea like navy men

But ever since Summer lost the baby two months ago, everything changed. It came as an unexpected shock. A blow. A hard, painful slap in the face. An awkwardness between them and a thick tension, capable of being cut with a knife. They used to be able to talk about anything, but that cool October day changed that. It was difficult. Things were different now.

'Cause now we say goodnight from our own separate sides
Like brothers on a hotel bed

Summer immediately shut her eyes as she heard Seth enter the room. She heard his tie slide off his collar and the sound of his feet slipping out of his shoes. She felt his weight sink into the sheets on the edge of the opposite of the bed. She heard him sigh into the darkness. A wet sigh.
