A Dog's life
He scratched his ear and yawned. Life on a starship was boring for a dog. There wasn't much to do and sometimes humans could act in the most peculiar manner. He had been on Enterprise for a good few years and he had grown use to the dull metallic boards in the captain's quarters. Being the dog of the captain had its perks … undivided attention from the crew. He knew they loved him and he had used those opportunities more than once to get a snack out of them.
His ears perked up as the sudden sound from the door interrupted his thoughts. It had to be Jon; there was no other account for the voice. But he wasn't alone. Portos hoped that this other person wouldn't be keeping the captain for long … he was hungry. His head lifted up slightly as the door opened.
Both T'Pol and Archer entered. They were talking about something serious, he could tell from the tone of their voices. He jumped off the bed and trotted over to say hello. He liked T'Pol … she smelled nice, not like most humans. She had also warmed up to him over the years. He knew she would, of course – he was adorable and no one could resist his charms for long.
She scratched him behind the ear and he smiled inwardly. She knew exactly where to touch. He licked her hand. His tail was wagging. But before she could pay more attention to him Jon grabbed her attention.
"T'Pol, thank you. I couldn't have done it without you today."
"You're welcome Captain." Archer handed Portos a slice of cheese, that he knew Jon would do eventually. Somehow, he knew that he shouldn't take his chances in asking for a second piece. There was something serious going on – he could sense it. Instead he backed off into his bed and watched.
It was a strange thing how humans showed affection. These two had been playing the mating game since the start and only now they showed their emotions. It was strange indeed. Portos squeezed his eyes shut as they kissed. It was more embarrassing for him than anything.
He tried to look cute again but they were enthralled in each other and ignoring him. Disgusted, he tried to sleep but his one eye kept popping open. How long would this kiss last? Finally, T'Pol left – thank goodness it was only a kiss, Portos didn't think he could bear anything more than that.
"Come boy," Jon called. Portos ignored him. He wasn't getting his affections back that quickly. "I've got a peace of cheese for you."
Portos considered this for a while and then trotted over. He couldn't be mad at him for long. Archer scratched his belly and all that had happened was forgotten to Portos.
"Boy, have I ever told you about the T'Pol?"
Of course you have.
"She's amazing."
Portos made a soft growl in acknowledgement. 'Right you are, you should let her scratch your ears – she knows what she's doing," Portos thought. Archer only smiled and sat down at his desk.
Portos returned to his cot. Sometimes, being on Enterprise was a dog's life.
