The wind of one door closing opens another

Sam sighed and looked at Jack over the multicoloured crystals. "Sir, at your house, before Daniel and Teal'c showed up, what I was trying to say-"

Jack cut her off. "I know."

He held her eyes for a moment before having to look away.

Sam took a minute to study the new crystal configuration. It was amazing that just changing around a few crystals and zatting them could make the ship exceed its maximum speed, and still remain structurally sound. To think that with the ancient knowledge in his mind Colonel O'Neill was able to just know what to do. It was astounding. To think how advanced they must have been before they ascended. To think how technologically advanced they could be now if they hadn't ascended.

Jack closed the crystal compartment with a snap. He turned to leave.

"Sir?"

A tiny smirk curled his lips. "You don't have to call me that any more, Carter."

Sam twisted her hands together. She could do this. She could. "Because you're no longer SG-1's commander?"

"I just said-" Jack stopped and studied her in concern. "You okay, Carter? You didn't get hit by the zat blast or hit your fron?"

Sam bit her lip and shook her head. "And you've resigned?"

"Carter-"

"Please, just answer the question."

Jack sighed; it was the tone of voice. The one that begs you to violate everything you believe, just so you won't leave her, so you won't die and she won't be alone. The one that meant this was important, and she was close to tears.

"Yes, I quit. I resign. I've made myself redundant."

Sam's lip trembled. "From the U.S. Air Force?"

"Yes."

"So you are no longer governed by its rules and regulations?"

"Y-" Jack's jaw dropped. Oh. Oh! "Yes."

Sam took a deep breath. "Good."

Without another word she launched herself at him, curling her hand into his jacket so he couldn't escape. One hand untangled and slid up his neck, pulling his head down.

And then they were kissing.

Not just the crummy pecks on the cheek you get from a distant relative.

Not even the kind Sam gave him when she was going all cave-girl.

It was deeper. It meant more.

It was possibly goodbye.

Jack groaned and moved his arms around her waist to pull her closer.

After what seemed like forever they pulled back, breathing heavily. Belatedly, Jack realized one of his hands was under Carter's shirt and that the other was on a place he hadn't been allowed to think about. Not that that really stopped him.

Jack looked Sam in the eye, trying to gage her reaction.

"Major Carter!" It was Bra'tac calling in a panic.

The old man had the best, and most definitely the worst, timing.

"The ship is accelerating at an alarming rate. It has exceeded its maximum speed by a significant factor!"

Reluctantly, they untangled themselves. Sam cleared her throat and ran her fingers through her hair to straighten it.

"I should-"

Jack nodded. "Yeah. I'll just- stay here. Gotta lot on my fron. Things to think about. You know me, quite the thinker."

Sam smiled. "If we-"

"I don't know. I'll try."

Sam nodded. "That's the best I can ask for."

"Major CARTER!"

Sam quickly turned on her heel and jogged out to explain things to the Jaffa master.

Jack watched her leave and grinned sardonically. "Yep. A lot on my fron."
