Chapter 1: The Hunt

He waited.

A leaf rustled, a light breeze blew.
The sound of crickets in the night, nocturnal animals engaging in sight.

In the midst of it, he remained unmoving.

He could feel it, he could hear it.
He didn't need to see it, but he knew his target was approaching.

The footsteps stopped.

He lifted his head and scanned the horizon.
He could sense it.

Fear, anxiety and confusion playing in tandem.
The palpitating heartbeat of his victim.
Trembling, paling, wondering when he would be free of this torment.

The man's footsteps resumed, but this time, with much more caution and alertness.

Hazel eyes followed his every moment, like a hungry hawk eying its prey.

He stepped out of the shadows.

The man turned around and gasped.

Unsteady hands gripped tightly onto a gun.
"I..I'll shoot!" He hollered. "Come any nearer...and.. and I'll shoot!"

Inwardly, he scoffed at his victim's weak attempt to threaten him.
He pretended to be thrown off by the other's shouts and dropped his knife onto the ground.
Stumbling a few steps back, he put some distance between them.

Interesting, he thought.

He watched as the man continued to rant and scream, holding on to a gun that had no bullets in it.

The man pointed the gun at his face and smirked.
The young boy didn't flinch.

"It's empty."

Startled by the comment, his victim fumbled with the gun for several seconds before realizing that it was, indeed, empty.
Panic stricken, the man ran, but tripped over his own feet.
As he struggled to pick himself up despite the pain in his ribs where he had been kicked, a shadow fell upon him.

Cold, unfeeling eyes met fearful ones in the dark.

The man got onto his knees and pleaded frantically with the assassin.
"No..N..Noo! Please... Ple-"

He turned and walked away as his victim collapsed into a lifeless heap behind him.

His gloved hands held on to a branch to steady himself as he threaded silently through the forest.
Blood was smeared on the branch, leaving a scent of evil and death thick in the air.

Swiftly, he maneuvered his way out of the forbidden territory and skillfully evaded the jaws of the guard dogs which he had yet to silence.

A dog sat up and growled ferociously, alerting its companions.
The rest of the herd wagged their tails vigorously, barking blindly in the direction of the unseen visitor.

Seconds later, silence once again ensued in the forest.
Eight dogs were left on the compound, bathed in blood and brutally slain.

He picked up the phone and dialed a number which had become so familiar to him, as he drove away in the dark, chilling night.

"Did you succeed?" A deep voice boomed when the phone was picked up.

Brushing off the soil on his black attire, he replied nonchalantly.
"You doubt me too much."

Imagining the smile that was forming on his father's face, he paused shortly, before continuing.

"I did it."

"Kunimitsu, you truly are my son."

Sensing that the latter was pleased with his accomplishment that night, he pressed the stop button and promptly ended the conversation.

Now let's see Syuusuke top that.

If Tezuka is an assassin, what does that make Fuji?
How exactly are they related?
