Title- Enemy Lines
Rating- PG13
Summary- When a mission Harry is on goes awry, he and his partner are stuck behind enemy lines.
"Damn it, Lavender, get down!" Harry hissed at his partner. How in the depths of hell had he gotten stuck on this mission with her anyway? Lavender's only response is to glare at him virulently and continue to leap up at odd intervals, firing hexes at the Death Eaters that had been pursuing them for the last hour.
"Lav, I said get down!" This time, Harry's instruction is coupled with a fierce yank on the battle robes that Lavender hastily donned before their departure on this insane excuse for a training exercise. At least, that's what Moody had called it when he had issued them this assignment. He'd actually referred to it as 'a training exercise in the value of covert reconnaissance', but as far as Harry could tell, there were only two things that this mission had taught him. The first was that Death Eaters didn't give up the chase easily when they caught Order members snooping around their fortresses. The second was that he was definitely going to need a new partner. The one was going to drive him completely mad.
"Harry, what are you doing? I almost had that last one!" Definitely going to drive him mad. Completely round the bend if he wasn't careful.
"Lav, reinforcements aren't coming. If they were, they'd have been here by now! We have to either get out of here quickly, or find a damn good place to hide." Harry was trying not to speak to loudly, for fear of drawing yet more attention to them. Like they didn't have enough as it was.
"Look, I just got rid of the two that were right behind us. If you'll Stop yanking on my robes and let me get a clear shot, I'm sure I can knock out a few more of them. We should be able to hole up here picking them off until someone shows up to help. I mean, it can't be that much longer, can it? And really, do you want to sit through another constant..."
Harry cut her off. "They've erected anti-apparition wards. There's no way we can get through them, and I have serious doubts about our ability to hold off the twenty Death Eaters I saw coming our way. Unlike us, they do have reinforcements, and they'll wipe us out. Now come on; I thought I saw a lake back the way we came. You have used the bubble-head charm, haven't you?"
"I've never had much use for diving around in lakes," Lavender shuddered "but I guess I'll have to learn sometime, eh?"
The fortress, really just a large manor house with grounds to match, was completely out in the middle of nowhere. This had made it extremely difficult for the Order to get any useful intelligence on its use, and was the reason it was used for training new Order members in stealth. Harry was rather starting to thing that Lavender needed some work in the area.
Fortunately, Harry was correct about the lake. They raced across the grounds, dodging the Death Eater patrols that had been sent out after them.
