"Aragorn, stop pacing, you are driving me mad!" said the Prince of Mirkwood to his friend, laughter present in his voice.
Aragorn stopped abruptly and snapped back "You are not the one who is going to become king"
"Well, technically-"Legolas began, but Aragorn cut him off "Don't even start," he warned and continued pacing and muttering under his breath.
Legolas watched his best friend for a few moments, he observed how much he had changed from that shy self- conscious boy who was brought to live in Rivendell many years before. Legolas had watched him grow into a loyal and courageous man. Still, at times, Legolas noticed that look in his eyes - of the shy, lost boy - it would only be a second before it disappeared, invisible to those who weren't as close to him as the elf. Finally deciding that it was time to save his friend from wearing a hole through the floor, he walked directly in front of Aragorn and placed both hands firmly on his shoulders forcing the man to look directly at him.
"Estel?" he said softly, Legolas knew exactly what was troubling his friend – as he could read his expressions very well – but he waited patiently for Aragorn to tell him.
Aragorn struggled in his grasp and looked away, "What if I fail?" he said so quietly so that Legolas could barely hear him.
"Aragorn," he said, "Estel, you will not fail!" he said shaking his head.
"What if I do?" Aragorn asked again, " Everyone will hate me!"
Legolas remained silent for a few moments before placing his hand under Aragorn's chin, trying to bring make him meet his eyes. The man continued to struggle and would not look up.
"Aragorn, look at me." he said gently but firmly. Aragorn slowly brought his dark brown eyes to meet Legolas' piercing blue ones. " I've seen many kings come and go, but you are by far the best of them all"
"You are just – " Aragorn began, but Legolas cut him off.
"No, I am not just saying that! It is true and you should know that I would never lie to you. I, for one, could never hate you, no matter what happens. I will be here for you and I am sure that there are many others who are in the same position as I, Arwen for one"
Aragorn looked at him, realization dawning in his eyes. He embraced his best friend who whole heartedly returned the embrace, "Thank you , mellon nin" he said breaking away.
"No problem, Estel" he said gazing proudly at the man that he had come to love as a brother. Then he grinned, "Come on! Your kingdom awaits." he said.
"Gondor, here I come, whether you like it or not!" Aragon stated proudly.
Legolas just laughed. "Same old Estel," he thought to himself. Some things would never change.
