"'S beautiful, isn't it?" he asked. They sat beside each other in his backyard, gazing at the heavens.
"Mm... yeah." She smiled. "The sky is so clear tonight. The stars are brilliant."
"Yeah, well, you outshine 'em all."
She laughed and punched him lightly on the arm. "You're so corny."
"What? It's true, isn't it?"
"Well, if you say so," she replied, batting her eyes at him.
"Of course." He kissed her.
"Hm, keep this up and pretty soon, people will think you're nothing but a big softie."
"Nah, I'll just threaten to beat them up."
"Oh, you wouldn't hurt a fly."
"I never said I'd actually beat them up."
They fell silent.
"Tomorrow, it will be three years..."
"Yeah. You gonna be okay?"
She shrugged. "I guess. Grandma has some of my mom's old things. I think I'll look through those, see what memories they bring." She sniffed and bit her lip.
He moved close and put his arm around her. "I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"I just wish there was more I could do for you. It makes me feel, I dunno, helpless."
"You're helping me now," she said, relaxing into his embrace, "just by being here for me."
"And I always will be."
"I know," she whispered, and they sat together silently under the stars, content.
